i found a lovely pair of heavy curtains in our local blythwood for £6 was intending to use them as door curtains to keep chills out but turns out they fit my lounge perfectly
, the ones that were up were on the thin side of transparancy:)
am keeping an eye out for a padded/ fleecy body warmer the ones online are so expensive
great what finds can be had0 -
I know this sounds completely backward but I generally only shop designer/originally expensive/vintage stuff in charity shops, if you go to charity shops in upmarket areas (not the main drag but just off) then the finds are amazing. With basics there is so little difference in the original price and the charity price that I just cant see the point.
However some charity shops have become a bit too cool for school and are passing off 'Vintage' as anything over 10 yrs old at silly prices!0 -

Ooh, wouldn't it be great if we could change the thread name to something like "my charity shop bargain today is....."?
Its been ages since I had a mooch around local CS's. Feeling the need now! I'm out and about tomorrow so might call in a few. I'll post if I get any bargains!!AF since 10.04.11

I tend to buy mostly from the local Shelter shop as it's the only one in the Manchester area.....very rarely go in Barnardos as it's the opposite end of where I live and the cancer one is very snooty for some reason (you actually get the impression you're being looked down on and I'm not the only person who things this!
)....Oxfam is good for books and china and I get picture frames from a local charity shop as they have loads....Did see my first jumble sale advertised a few weeks ago at the local church hall :j Unfortunately it was for a weekend we were away
but maybe they're making a comeback!
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green0 -
Don't think I have ever posted to this thread before but had to share my charity shop bargain today - a Gap coat, its duffle coat style which I love, in heavy white cotton with quilted lining and has fixed hood, has zip and buttons to do up, two big pockets on front that close with poppers and one big one inside again with poppers, cuffs also can be opened or closed with poppers. It was slightly dirty, and priced at £12 and I pointed out how it needed a wash and manager had a look and decided to let me have it for £5. I had been thinking as its cream that even if I couldn't wash out the marks I could dye it, but as it turned out after a 40c wash as label stated every mark came out, tumble dryed it and took it out straight away and it looks brand new. Its big enough to wear a few layers underneath if its really cold but not to big, I always have a look in the charity shops and do pick up odd bargains but none like this. I am over the moon a brand new coat for the winter for £5 comfy, not to young, I am 55 but even my granddaughter says it looks good on me ( she is 12 and soon tells me if I look like mutton dressed as lamb) so one happy shopper today as needed a new coat but couldn't really afford the expense so thought I would be wearing my still serviceable but worn one again this winter, the fact that it was in my size 18 makes me feel it was waiting for me, as you can tell still buzzing over it.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Oxfam do price a bit too high I think, but on the other hand their online bookshop is great for bargains My DD got me two of Ken Follett's books for £1.50 each The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End which I had been trying to get from the library The first one I was 64th on the list of folk wanting to borrow it!!! Best books I have read for a long time and not in bad condition either. We have two Sense shops locally, and the little one isn't too bad for prices, but the bigger one which also does furniture and electrical reconditioned good is a lot priceier and its almost opposite the little one.The big one does end of line stuff from cataloges at the same price as the stuff was new .Needless to say not a lot of stuff gets bought there0

I use Mind charity shops a lot, mainly for books. They seem to do a lot of BOGOF or other offers when they have a glut of books in stock.
The BHF shops seems to have gone a bit expensive after they have redecorated the shop. Marie Curie is good for some things, I bought my son a giant Early Learning Centre dinosaur puzzle for a couple of pounds. There's an independent animal charity shop, I bought about ten different sized pairs of knitting needles for £1, they seem to have a lot of craft bits in there.
I've noticed that the charity shops in the town I live in are looking quite sparsely stocked, maybe this is a symptom of the economic times, as more people are trying to sell unwanted goods privately. I need to cast my charity shop net further afield and give my local ones time to recover0 -
Nipped in to our local red cross shop yesterday and I spotted 4 cute sherry glasses with gold stars on them, I thought they would make excellent candle holders for Christmas and at 20p each I thought they were a bargain, got home and chopped up an old candle I had and melted it down, positioned the wick in the glass and tipped the hot wax in ... The results were brilliant and all for 80p.... and they look lovely even if I do say so myself..October grocery Challenge
