TalkTalk Broadband now cheaper

After pressure from the ASA, Carphone have had to alter their deal a little, and have offered a new service.

The original combined telephone+broadband service (Talk3 International) still exists. But there is now a basic Talk3 service with free broadband, but without the free international calls, however it's £1 cheaper. They've also dropped the connection cost, although will charge you for a modem £29.99 (this is not compulsory. If you have an appropriate modem, don't tick the box !):-

Talk3:-
Unlimited number of inclusive calls to any local and national UK landline, anytime
Line rental £11
£8.99 per month
=£19.99 per month (INCLUDING LINE RENTAL)
(+ OPTIONAL one-off payment for modem @£29.99)

If you can get it in your area, it's great (My neighbour got told he could get it, yet two months later told him he couldn't, AFTER he'd paid for those two months !)

    Hi,

I think you have answered my question already - these forums are so good and quicker than emailing talk talk themselves, who say they will reply in up to five days! I saw that they were now charging for the modem, and this put me off as i was aware of the £30 admin fee. Is it true that you will only have to pay for the modem and not the admin fee for talk 3 international as well?

I hope so! i was starting to think that it was working out a lot more expensive than i thought!

    thanks!

  • To be honest, their website is a bit unclear on this. There's certainly no connection fee (admin charge as you put it) for the basic Talk3. I get the feeling it's the same for the International, but you'd need to clarify that with them directly. Remember also the lead time from you signing up to it and getting the broadband service. Certainly in my area, if I sign up now I won't actually get the broadband side until END of September ! (meanwhile they will start taking the money in 3 weeks).

As per my original thread, if you already have an ADSL modem, then you don't need to buy one from them (their price of £29.99 is pretty good incidentally !)

Remember as with most contracts, it you try to terminate it within the minimum period (in this case 18 months), you will have to pay a fee.

Thanks Dave the Rave! I have now signed up (did this through Quidco and I seem to have got £10 cashback, as I ended up signing to the normal talk 3). I only got charged for the modem, and not for admin so it is better than I thought!

I know what you mean about the wait - mine says end of September as well, but the deal is better than any other for me at the moment, so I am going to go for it!

    Thanks again!

You'd contact Talk Talk, thats who you pay for the service.

Does anyone know what modem it is you get for the £30? - if it's the Sagem Fast 800 then it's not particularly good value for money (you can get similar on Ebay for less than a tenner).

Incidentally, according to their website, anyone who has already signed up with the Talk 3 International deal can swap to the Talk3 tariff thereby saving a £1 a month! (not sure if this would mean starting a new 18 month contract though...)

I heard there where lots of problem trying to sign up to this offer as more people applied from it than they could deal with. AS said above people seem to have been paying for it before they got it.
Does anyone know if the situation has changed any ?
Does anyone know how you can easily find out if it is available in your area ?

all they're doing is installing a normal broadband service that you would get with any adsl company.

So the excuse 'its not available in your area' is a load of rubbish (unless you live in the 2-5% of the uk that doesnt have adsl enabled exchanges).

Fact is that Talk Talk cant process the orders quick enough and even most of the time they install it within a week of customers saying 'I want your broadband services' etc. Then Talk Talk come back 4-6 weeks later, saying sorry we cant install it because theres an existing service on the line!

    Avoid Talk Talk imo!

Sorry but that is simply untrue! Talk Talk are supplying their own broadband service using Local Loop Unbundling and some exchanges have no LLU equipment installed at present and some remote exchanges probably never will. Check your particular exchange for LLU equipped providers here.

Talk Talk customers who have been supplied since early april/may to about june/july have not gone under their LLU scheme. To be honest i have not seen any 'Talk Talk LLU' customers in my dealings with them (I work for BT Wholesale).
