A family member works for a leading supermarket told me that 'leading' brands have to be put at eye level on the shelf. Apparently the manufactuers pay the supermarkets to do so. Its all to do will psychology. So we have to start bending and stretching to get the same stuff! By the way I often try the economy brands. Some of them are yuk (Tesco's economy tea for example) but some are really ok (Tesco's economy chocolate digestive bars are really nice) so give it a go.

Hey! I really like their value tea! Even took some tea-bags on holiday with us cos hotel tea is always too strong and bitter!

Very interesting Fatboy, I remember reading an article ages ago too about how it costs pennies to make perfume and the rest of the cost goes on , packaging, hype, advertising and keeping the brand a 'unique' sort of thing. I shall definitely be trying some copies now.

Try ebaying for Juicy and Smells Like clones - very good

Tesco own-branded washing powder is ok and not overly expensive. I use their non-biological brand and buy a 5kg box that lasts me 12 months but then I am miserly with it and I do live on my own.

Tesco value chopped tinned tomatoes are ok too.

I have to say that I've never found an own brand paint that matches up to the texture & covering power of Dulux, so if they do make paint for others, it must be a completely different formula they use I feel.

I understand that the difference between Dulux retail paint & the one they market as trade is that the trade is a watered down version. Apparently builders & painters prefer a more runny constistancy, finding it easier to work with as it dries quicker than the retail version.

Used to work for ICI many, many eons ago - we made Woolco paint in those days - same paint exactly! Trade paint actually has better opacity than non-trade - which is why it is dearer. It is thicker than ordinary, not thinner - and if you have a dark colour you want to cover up - then it is totally your best choice!

P.S. Tried B & Q own brand against Dulux in Brilliant White a couple of years ago - in my kitchen. Have just repainted - and the B & Q one washed off better - and came up whiter than the bit where I had used Dulux. This came about cos I had a lot of the B & Q one left of my own - and scrounged a bit of Dulux from my mum when that ran out. It was enough to do just the one wall - furthest from my solid fuel aga - but I will be buying B & Q again - unless I need a trade paint.

Cranswick Country foods make premium sausages for Sainsbury's, Tesco etc...and Lidl!

The only thing that changes is the cardboard outer, the black plastic tray and sausages are all the same. (The ingredients and nutritional information on the packs are also the same)

The Lidl sausages are £1.79 (Sometimes £1 when on offer). In Sainsbury they are well over the £2 mark, likewise in the other supermarkets.

Lidl recently did some car wiper blades.

IDENTICAL to the Bosch blades they were replacing, save for the word "Bosch" stamped in the metal. (Fixings, blade profile, paint finish etc. the same.)

Lidl: £3.99 per pair. The last lot of Bosch blades I bought were ~£20.

DF is a bit of a brand freak, and is convinced that anything cheaper is inferior where I am not too proud to use own brands

The public underestimate the power of branding! Take the label off a tin of Heinz beans and it's value instantly drops by half!

Try substituting some of DF's fave products with the next brand down and see if the switch gets noticed..refill packets and bottles if you have to.

I recently found out AEG is now made by Electrolux and is the same underneath as Zanussi. When you look closely, it becomes apparent.
My old AEG washing machine was expensive and good (second only to Miele) but became uneconomical to repair when a replacement motor costs the same a new budget machine.
As AEG new prices have fallen to Zanussi levels recently, maybe their parts will too.
Looks like the only quality independent brand is now Miele! They are excellent but must have a limited market so maybe it's just a matter of time before they get gobbled up!

Don't knock Zanussi! I own a 24 year old (last April - it was my birthday present to myself at age 26) automatic washing machine - which has seen heavy duty wear throughout its life. It has just had its first ever visit from a repair man, to have new brushes fitted - and is going as good as gold again. The repair cost me £70.00 - but she owes me NOTHING this machine - and I would hate to part with her. Repair man said that I could not expect this sort of service from ANY of the new machines!
