Yes, I know what you mean there - but after you've been using it for a while, you tend to get a feel for the way that timewasters interact with you.
I now never assume someone is coming to collect something unless they have sent at least one properly-worded reply and given a firm date and time. And always keep a reserve list.
Good points, I run a Freegle group and we try and encourage members to get a firm date and time and a phone no if possible.
We also recommend people choose a recipient based on location rather than who is first to reply which seems to help with avoiding no shows.
Some Freegle Groups also have an associated Cafe site where members can discuss how to get the best from Freegle groups and also share local money saving tips.

Another option is find a MAR (Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher) of a sort
They can take your old equipment and rebuild it to be provided to charities or sold on etc.
It's something I'm looking into myself on the small scale as a sideline
http://www.mar.partners.extranet.microsoft.com/MARDirectoryByLoc.aspx
Choose UK as location and you will get all the MARs registered with Microsoft. All 13 pages worth, there's bound to be someone close.
EDIT - Did a search for you, in your neck of the woods so to speak. I'm only going by your username btw..

I just disposed of 3 old computers this weekend
i destroyed the hard drive platters (the disc inside) with a hammer as they had contained financial info in the past (and they where only 40gb) and took them down the local council dump, which has an electronics recycling "bin"0 -

Or use DBAN to wipe them clean - either way I would ensure that there is NO data whatsoever on the hard drive...“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -
Have you got any Computer Clubs nearby.
I'm sure they would willingly take your old computer etc off your hands0 -
