Broken LP, help needed please

Hi
I have bought and paid a rare Hip-Hop LP on behalf on my son, on the internet, from a private seller on Discogs website. The LP was dispatched from Canada. It arrived today, broken in two.
My son is distraught, as he has saved for a long time to buy this (probably) unique vinyl and he only earns very little money as a paper boy while studying. There is no way he can afford such a loss (apart from the terrible disappointment, which is inevitable unfortunately).
I paid via Paypal which takes the money from my Visa credit card, but the purchase was under £100.
What rights do I have as a consumer?
Thank you very much for any suggestion and help.

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Sorry to say but you don't have any consumer rights. It was a private sale and from someone in Canada. As far as I am aware paypal wont be interested either although you can try a claim through them"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

Thank you - I suspect you are right, I know I can get at least £39 from the Royal Mail but the total we spent was £68! I have discovered that the seller is an online store so I am investigating further if I can get something back from them as well, at least the difference. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

You may not have any sepcial legal rights, but that does not mean all is lost.
Have you logged into paypal and raised a dispute?
Do that before contacting your credit card.
As far as paypal are concerned the item is the seller's responsibility until recieved by the buyer.0 -

If it was sent from Canada then it wouldn't have been sent by Royal Mail.
First think to do it contact the seller and see what they say, he might offer a refund or replacement so it's worth a shot. Only after you've tried that should you be looking anywhere else0 -
If paypal can't/won't help, it's also worth trying your credit card. I know that purchases are only guaranteed over £100, but I have heard of people being successful with smaller amounts, generally through good will I expect.
It may also be worth asking the seller with regard which carrier they used. Perhaps the package was insured up to a certain amount?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

Even if the purchase was over a £100 it is still not subject to Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act for the simple reason the charge went through Paypal. This puts a extra stage in the payment process ie the money doesn't go direct to the seller. So even then it would be up to the good will of the credit card company"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."
