Sorry to invade thread, but wondered if anyone can advise where to go for a ring under £200?
  • I am planning to get a bespoke ring as the shape of my engagement ring means that a straight band doesnt 'sit' right.
I met a local jewellery maker at a wedding fair, had a chat and really liked their attitude, and the designs they make.
They emailed me 3 designs that would fit with my engagement ring, and will cost between £400-£550 for a platinum ring.

I have no idea if this is good value or not, but we are going to go with them anyway as I like to support local businesses as much as possible, I felt really comfortable talking to the couple, and they are happy for me to visit them at their parents home near me for fittings etc, rather than me having to go out of my way to their studio
  • I'm getting my wedding band made by a small, local jeweller (£325 for white gold, handmade to my design). I couldn't find anything that I liked that went with my engagement ring.

For an MSE alternative have you got a local art school - most of them have jewellery courses and final year students might be at a high enough level, happy to earn money to fund degree shows, but not able to charge a premium as they are not yet qualified (and they also don't have to pay for premesis etc)?

Don't think there is an art school around us but will have a look into it :)

I have read up a bit on Paladium, and not sure I like the sound of it as a metal...

Palladium is of the same "family" as platinum, and is only very slightly softer, but still very hard wearing. It has just been awarded its own hallmark, which means that jewellers can now sell it, rather than bullion dealers. It has been used in the armaments industry for many years, and is also used in dentistry as an 'ingredient' in dental alloys.
