Fruit Tree's in containers?

I have been given a young Cox's Pippin apple tree and I was wondering if it was suitable to be planted in a container of maybe 15 Litres or larger.

Internet searches have been inconclusive! Does anyone have any experience of fruit trees in containers?

Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

  • I've read a number of articles saying much the same but also quite a few suggesting that the yield is poor, the roots weak and although containers keep the tree smaller they also seem to fall over and damage frequently. However, none of these articles/blogs/etc. seem to come from trees grown in the North of England where I am.

I was looking to see if anyone here has actually grown a fruit tree in a container?

No one on my allotment site has done so, apart from Blueberries. I myself have done strawberries in containers before but again, not a very good comparison. :undecided

I've got apple, cherry and pear trees in pots in my garden in the North of England and they're doing champion. Cherry has been in 3 years and apple and pear went in last year. Very healthy, growing at a good rate. Pots are a good size (around 2 foots each way) and I keep them regularly fed and watered, especially in the warmer weather. Have had a handful of cherries 2 years running, but other 2 are too young to fruit just yet.

I was looking on Ken Muir's website at minarette trees and I am seriously considering getting a cheery and a duo pear. We are renting, so I could move my trees when we move. They grow up to 2.4 m.

Not cheap, but I got some strawberries from there last year and they were so good and delicious!

Ohhh,I'll watch this thread with interest too as i'm thinking of getting an apple tree as theres some good offers starting now on them.
I am also wanting to do exactly the same, keep it in a container so this thread gives me some optimism.

My cherry came from Bakker (I seem to rememer) bought as a patio size, suitable for containers. First year doubled in size, no flowers or fruit. Second year gorgeous blossom and 3 cherries, full blossom and crop yearly afterwards.

The apple and pear were from Morrisons. Just bog standard fruit trees. Bought them looking a bit like a dead stick, a couple of leaves each, very little in the way of roots at all.

Sorry I can't be more technical - I'm learning as I go along. This is about my 5th year of gardening, so I'm slowly building up my knowledge by trial and error.
I plant it, it has 2 option - grow or die!

I hope you have success with your trees!
