Don't think it has any thing to do with petrol though it may seem so. It is most likely electrical sparks, short circuiting. Spray all the electrical wires inside the engine withWD40, you may select part of the engine each time to see if the problem is fixed. Then you can try to figure out what is causing the short cct.

I had this problem with my citron.

as it occurs when very low on fuel i would rule out electrical faults
and would not recommend people with no mechanical knowledge to start spraying things willy nilly,
if its electrical it would show up on a simple ecu scan test reading stored and pending dtc's

How would you explain the air rushing into the tank when cap is removed then. THE BREATHER system is not functioning!

    Hey dude,

I was checking this problem - "hissing noise, sucking noise when unscrewing fuel cap" on Google and the general consensus is that almost 80% of people have this issue and it is perfectly normal?

Can you offer your input to this?

    Cheers

Sorry, can't offer anything more I'm not familiar with the Micra. Air rushing in when the cap is unscrewed normally indicates a blocked breather. Does you problem go away when you remove the cap?

    Thanks for that,
It is either a leaking capacitor or sparking electrics. WD40 is the easiest to try first.
