OMG after reading all this it sounds so complicated.

I'd like a wireless router as I'm using a modem which I've had for 5 years but want to add another computer to is as 3 of us scrabbling to use one at the mo.

As for changing companies that will be difficult where I live as the company has a monopoly and they are reluctant and charge really high prices to other companies so all the city is stuck with one provider which is Karoo (Kingston Communications). The router

Moved into present house and was getting speed of just over 7 and 8 in previous house but this new fone line kept disconnecting and they kept saying the speed was going too fast for the line so they turned it down twice and now getting 4.6 which I'm not happy about and they also said something about the noise???? whatever that is.

I'd be most grateful for some advise please.

What advice are you looking for? Setting up a wireless router really is not complicated, you can either do it manually or use the CD's which almost all ISP-supplied routers will come with, this does it virtually all for you.
USB modems are effectively obsolete and less reliable than using a router and ethernet connection. Your ISP can usually be persuaded to supply one FOC if you are out of contract.
If you have noise on the line affecting your speed (crackling/noise during calls?) then you need to report this to your line provider as a phone problem, not a broadband problem. Have you tried changing the ADSL filter?

    Yes tried different filters.

I wondered what was best router to get.

We dont really have a time scaled contract as its the only company we can use

For a router, my preference is netgear - not the cheapest, but definitely solid stuff. Linksys & Dlink are fine too

You do still have a minimum term contract, whether Karoo is the monopoly supplier or not.
If you've done your minimum 12 months or whatever, then just tell them that your modem has broken and you can't afford a new one and will have to terminate your broadband contract if they can't provide a free wireless router. They may have a monopoly, but the contract is still yours to negotiate.
