Just another quick question before I go and give it my best shot...the wires which have come with the router are all too short to work with how I have currently got everything set up, can I just remove my old modem and put the new router in it's place thus continuing to use the current wiring?

Yes as long as the existing cables are serviceable. Phone cable from NTE5 master socket to router. Mains adaptor from mains socket to router. Ethernet cable from router to PC.
Remember that you must have ADSL filters on every active phone extension, that includes Sky boxes.

Thanks so much for all your help, advice, support and patience - I really appreciate it.

Right I'm off to give it a go, it seems that the set up can take around 30 minutes (so perhaps an hour for a novice like me) but hopefully I will be back on here within the hour, with a glass of wine in hand reporting my success...

    WOOHOOO I've done it!

It was fairly simple, though it asked me what security type I wanted so I opted for WPA-PSK+ WPA2-PSK and I had no idea but that sounded the best :rotfl:
I'm really unsure as to what I've just done and want to make sure my connection is secure, is there any way to determine that I have set it all up correctly?

Oh dear I seem to be having some problems :(
Have been disconnected from the interenet a couple of times and had a look in the "control panel" "network connections"
There was a "internet gateway" icon which said disabled, I clicked "enable" nothing happened despite several attempts so shut down pc. Restarted pc, went back to network connections and the "internet gateway" icon has completely disappeared??
I have 2 connections showing under LAN or High Speed Connections - both now showing as Connected, Firewalled but were "disconnected" before.
    Help, I'm feeling confused...

Hi Paul_R, thanks for your post but I'm a complete novice and that all sounds like a different language to me :o

Since switching on today I have had no problems, not lost connection (yet!) and the internet gateway icon thingy-me-bob-wots-it is back and is showing as "connected"

As it all seems to be working OK should I just leave well alone and presume I've set it all up safely and hope that I continue to get a reliable connection to the interweb? (it never asks me to connect anything and never asks for a password which seems strange as I'm used to having to go through that procedure before being able to get onto the net)

By and large the wireless password is permanently saved; therefore you don't receive further prompts. Likewise the password you receive from your ISP which is permanently saved in the router's settings.

I did think it must be something along those lines but you have put my mind to rest on that one, thanks. Do I need to do pinging and ipconfig or whatever it's called as suggested by Paul_R? or should I just leave it alone now that it seems to be working?

There are two schools of thought on turning off the router daily or leaving it on permanently, I turn mine off every night

    Me too! ;)

Thanks, for the reassurances, hopefully it will continue to work without any more problems. I will do as you do and will turn off at night.

OMG after reading all this it sounds so complicated.

I'd like a wireless router as I'm using a modem which I've had for 5 years but want to add another computer to is as 3 of us scrabbling to use one at the mo.

As for changing companies that will be difficult where I live as the company has a monopoly and they are reluctant and charge really high prices to other companies so all the city is stuck with one provider which is Karoo (Kingston Communications). The router

Moved into present house and was getting speed of just over 7 and 8 in previous house but this new fone line kept disconnecting and they kept saying the speed was going too fast for the line so they turned it down twice and now getting 4.6 which I'm not happy about and they also said something about the noise???? whatever that is.

I'd be most grateful for some advise please.
