If I'm mid term with GF on a pay monthly Direct Debit ... can I just cancel? Or will I be invoiced for the entire year?

I think these are annual subscriptions we see a lot of folk moaning when they try and cancel. However, I think they are normally fully paid up so I'm not sure.

If in doubt read their T&C's.
  • Cancelled my Green Flag monthly payment as I bought a new car that had a years breakdown cover. Cancelled the policy after paying approx. £30 on a £99 policy.
They are saying that I have to pay a cancellation fee of almost £50. Not sure of the maths on this one, but I am being threatened with debt collectors after one week. I requested a copy of the t&c's but have not received them yet.
To my mind 50% of the annual fee equates to around £50, This less the £30 already paid surely only equals £20....
Seems very heavy handed of GF and not sure if I should ride this out.

I cancelled 4 months into my membersip (cause they are rubbish) anyhow never heard from them again!
  • Their web site says "As long as you've not called us out during your period of breakdown cover, we'll give you a partial refund. We base the amount of your refund on a daily rate minus a cancellation charge of 50% of the annual price of your cover. Unfortunately we can't provide a refund on the European element of our top level of cover, EuroPlus."

The way I read it, it means if you had a year's cover costing, say £100, and you're half way through a year's cover, you probably won't get anything back, as you've used up £50 of the year's cover already, and they'll also charge you a cancellation free of £50 as well?

My Green Flag policy expires in December 2011.
I pay £7.60 month for this.
Canceled on 21 April and was told that it is cheaper for me to carry on paying the monthly premiums until December rather than accept the cancellation fee.

    Beware

I am also in the same boat. Have been with GF for 3 years and have decided that I do not need breakdown cover anymore due to the current climate and not using my car a quarter as much as I used to (it's mostly kept in the garage these days) and that I have moved home and can walk to the shops now and do not use my car daily.

I phoned up GF today to say that I want to cancel 8 months into 12 month recurring contract that I did not sign, to have a very RUDE woman tell me that I will still owe them £25 to cancel even though i have not used them once in 3 years! They have had £300 out of me over the past 3 years for nothing and yet they still want more! I have cancelled my direct debit with my bank but apparently the woman threatned me on the phone saying they will find me and demand the money!

Surely paying monthly I will just not receive the breakdown cover after stopping DD?? These people are like a financial company, not a breakdown company!! This is disgusting and I am never using them again that is for sure!

Please let me know what some of your outcomes have been, I am pulling my hair out because I do NOT want debt collectors coming around my house!

They are a financial company. It's an insurance service. Like any other insurance policy, you buy it for a year at a time. The fact they let you spread the payment out over the year by paying monthly is irrelevant - you're not on a rolling one month contract with them.

The cancellation terms are as follows:
    This Policy may be cancelled:
By you at any time by providing 7 days’ notice in writing
which must be accompanied by your certificate. In such
event, provided no claims have been made in relation to the
Policy, we will issue a refund which will be calculated on a
pro-rata basis, and charge a cancellation fee of one month’s
    Premium

As with any insurance, when you get your annual renewal notice in the post, think carefully about whether you want/need the service for the next year. Cancelling a policy part-way through is usually uneconomical.

Breakdown insurance company, yes I see that is how they advertise themselves! hmmmm

Anyhow, I decided to stick with my contract till Aug, I phoned them back up and spoke to a lovely young man who changed my address for me (without charge which the lady was trying to do) and he reduced my monthly payments because of the safer area I have moved to. I advice anyone who didnt get a good deal the first time they phoned, try again an hour later, your more than likely get through to a nicer person! I will however be ending my contract in Aug...

yep, I agree with this - car breakdown cover is insurance, and its a yearly policy, and you get yearly renewal notifications, just like other insurance policies (home contents, buildings etc).
