Problem with car insurance

I received a letter in mid January stating that I had cancelled my policy when in fact there had been a problem with my Direct Debit in December and I never received the letter informing me of this. Long story short, policy was stopped on 1 January and I am in the middle of complaint proceedure with them. I took out a new policy with a different company and they now want to know if I had insurance from 1 Jan to start date of new policy. I didn't have any insurance but what do I tell the new company?

I would tell them "no, due to an admin error on the part of your former insurer" and thats the reason you have moved on.
