FTP Software

Options
I am in the process of setting up a basic website. I was using WS-FTP Software to upload my files with great success. I then made significant changes to my web pages and copied and dragged a bunch of files all at once out of the website and back into my directory to prepare to upload the new files.

Since then I cannot connect to WS-FTP. I thought it was the software, so I downloaded Filezilla - but I can't connect to it either to upload my files. I have tried re-installing the software and also restoring my PC and re-installing, all to no avail.

I suspect that my PC settings have changed somewhere along the line and won't let me use FTP software.

Any suggestions as to what I can do?

You can use internet explorer to do FTP. Just type FTP address into the address bar and it turns into a remote file manager.

    See if that works.
If it doesn't then I'd look at firewall settings.

  • Sorry for being so thick but if I type the FTP address it brings up the web page. Can you give me an example of what I should type into the address bar?

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • I've used the free software called FTP Surfer for years. VERY (and I'm a newbie to webdesign) easy to use and very similar to the Windows Explorer environment.

You can download it for free here:

    Enjoy...
  • Thanks Mr Web Design. I've downloaded the software and am trying to connect to the FTP site - however, it is telling me it is unable to connect to FTP Server.

Perhaps it is my Firewall settings (Tomstickland). Anyone help me with changing the settings, but not putting my PC at risk?

Your firewall would normally only block inbound connection attempts on port 21, to stop people getting at your PC.

Which software firewall are you using? If you are using ZA/sygate/kerio, you may have inadvertently block outgoing as well.. Do you have a router.

Could it be another reason, password expired or wrong?

does this work? (just a test download to check ftp on your PC, delete it after downloading, or cancel once it starts)

Or could it be the webserver has a problem and it is offline?

Might be worth waiting a bit and then trying your original software again.

Sounds like either the FTP server you were trying to connect to was down or your firewall has started to block all FTP traffic outbound.

Try connecting to another FTP site such as ftp.microsoft.com. If that works, chances are the server you are/were connecting to is down. If that also does not work, its your PC.

Maybe check your control panel and enable ftp.

Usually free sites only allow you to upload via control panel say 1 to 8 files at a time.

    usually ftp://ftp.!!!!!!.com/username as an example.
  • I'm tearing my hair out!! I've tried everyone's suggestions with no success. It must be my computer that's the problem because I have downloaded several different FTP programmes and none of them work. The FTP Server is definitely working because my sister has been connecting with no problems and uploading files and no one has changed the password.

It must be my firewall. I am using Windows XP Firewall. Should I get another firewall and switch off the Windows one? If so can anyone recommend one. Windows XP Firewall has never caused problems before and when I first started uploading files to the Server everything was working fine.
