What I dont understand is why your employers have felt the need to do what they have done! Surely its none of their busienss - but I guess its a bit like people grassing up people who are claiming what they shouldnt. How did you find out that they had written to your bank about it? Have you spoken to your bank to find out if they have received it?

u should be lucky.. my HR is parctially useless. if i need anything done with my tax codes or anything to do with the tax office..I have to do all the work/telephone, fill in forms.. HR says, its not their business..
so tsoprano..do u work for MI5??? i'm sure they are running out of secret agents these days..!! LOL..
on a more serious note.. : go to HR and ask them :why did they send a letter to ur bank? on what grounds and take it from there..

I don't understand why they felt the need to take it that far. I think it was a nasty thing to do. I can't actually go to HR as I found this out by accident. I am not supposed to know about it. My worry is, can that go on some kind of permanent record? Will my bank have a question mark beside my name? Will it affect my credit rating, etc? I don't think so but at the same time I don't know. I don't know if the police were contacted but I have an appointment with my bank tomorrow to hear their side of the story. I don't know if the police have a question mark against me. I am also worried in case the bank turn round and say they have to inform my employers that the conversation took place. I have no idea what the legal priviledges are in this case. Also am feeling quite bad generally as I felt that I got on quite well with the two people in question that did this to me. I don't know if I am over reacting and this was just procedure or if I should just let it go. However, I was told that the police would not be contacted and yet my bank seem to have been encouraged to contact them as a middleman. Feel like my thoughts are going round and round on this one and I cannot trust anyone at work.

Yeah dont worry bout it, just see what your bank manager has to say today. He may be able to shed more light on the whole affair - though why your works would do this I dont know!

Thanks to everyone who replied. I really appreciate it.

went to Bank. They said they were aware of the situation and that they think my employer is bonkers. which is a relief - glad I am not alone!

Now you can tell your employer you no what they did because you got the info via your bank . Ask your employer to explain themselve .

Absolutely. I think it also might be worth contacting CAB. Your employer has, at best, acted in a totally unethical manner, and in fact, I think is actually breaking the law - not only have they clearly broken the DPA, but it sounds as if they're also guilty of libel, making defamatory accusations, and bullying. You need advice!

It's not entirely correct to say it's none of their business - it would depend on your contract. Some businesses state clearly in their contract that the employer has to inform HR if they are taking on any other work (it usually only becomes a concern if the person is working for another company in the same field, and there's any possibliity of industrial espionage - MI5 again!). However, even if that is in your contract, it gives them no right to contact any third party about it.
