Do the 4 out 5 bolts hold it tight? there is no movement on the headlamp when you grip it?

If there is no movement I would say it is not insecure and should not fail. But your only recourse to challenge it is to go to VOSA and pay for a full MOT and only if they agree with you will you get your MOT and not be charged for the test.

Wait and see what response from people who are or have been MOT testers or worked in a MOT station.
I ask on this place from time to time for advice

Only problem with council is my local one is booked well over one month ahead. You really need to book well in advance.

Regards things being secure, on my old car my battery was held with two spring clamps for a few years (the original bolts had snapped off). An MOT tester mentioned it once on an advisory notice but it was never mentioned otherwise. Never came loose or anything. I later drilled and tapped the battery tray though and secured it with bolts (didn't need to but was something to do).

How does it need a complete exhaust if it failed on a rubber mount?

Because Kwik Fit sell them? :D
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Yeah, it is easy enough to weld a new bracket onto your exhaust. TBH, unless you have had new rubber hangers put on recently, it is unusual for the bracket to go, unless it is the hanger on the car itself and you have had a new exhaust fitted in the past few years... But if that is the case I don't see why they would want to replace the whole exhaust. In fact, if the bracket was on the exhaust part, there is still no reason to replace the WHOLE exhaust, they could just replace the component if they didn't want to weld it on.

As for a missing bolt in the headlight, if the others hold it securely you could just find any old bolt and shove it in!

May I ask if you are male or female? Your username seems male to me, but you never know! :o The reason I ask is that I have a belief that they will more often try to rip off women or men who seem uninformed. If you know anyone who knows a bit (or a lot) about cars, I would take them with you and ask the manager to show you exactly where the snapped off bit is. While the car is up on the ramp, look at the exhaust system. If it looks rusty, give the big silencer at the back a gentle thump with the heel of your hand or side of fist and listen for a slight rattling noise - if you hear that, or if it has rusty holes in it, then it will need replacing. If, however, it looks quite shiny or any rust is only on the surface, there is no need to replace it completely. In fact, it is unusual for the whole exhaust system to rust, they need only replace the very rusty bits! Ask the manager to explain exactly WHY they need to replace the whole exhaust system if there is only one broken component... This is where having someone who knows about cars is useful - they can challenge any nonsense or technical bluffs... If they are clearly in the wrong in trying to sell you a system you CLEARLY don't need, you can always threaten to call the trading standards office - chances are they will rectify it for free (or at least give you a free re-test) to keep you quiet! :D

If you don't know anyone who knows about cars, I would suggest taking your car to an independant garage (try to get recommendations in your area - you could ask on here) and see what they say, then if they don't think you need a whole exhaust, you can go back to *that place* and do the same as above. If you really get on with the mechanic, you could even ask them to go with you!

I have heard some horror stories about these types of places, such as the sales targets they have, and as a result end up selling completely unnecessary components to vulnerable people, some of whom can't really afford it!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • Had a look at the headlight today. Loose my !!!!... Hardly.
Tightened a few of the bolts - took about 30 seconds tops. Nothing wrong now.

And these nobheads were telling me I needed a new headlight unit.
Off for another MOT today with a place that only does MOTs. Get a real idea of whats required (if anything).

I promise NEVER to visit KwikFit again.

Kwik fit are a rip off. I got caught doing my MOT with them once. I didn't get the repairs done there - they wanted £600 for something to do with the exhaust that cost me £70 at an independent garage. They signed off the MOT when I went back but wanted an extra £10 for doing so. Real rip off merchants - I hope they go out of business (she said vindictively.... :-)

Tyres are another thing. If you find you need one as a result of an MOT, before you shell out £40 for a new one with the garage, I would maybe check our wreckers. We picked up a perfectly good tyre at our local wreckers for £10.

Cymru am beth, (and a bit less rain would be nice :-) and down with Kwikfit and all garages like them forever!
