Hiya everybody, in about a month or so my brother in law is going into prison. The problem is he has quite a bit of outstanding debt. He has a car on finance, credit card, loan, contract phone the usual really. What do you guys suggest he does regarding this debt? Obviously he can't pay it in Jail, and I don't think my Sister will be able to keep it all up. Has anybody been in this situation before? What is the best sollution? Any help is appreciated, thanks
Your sister may be able to get the single person Council Tax reduction because I think a person in prison is excempt (?)

    Take care,

@ wonder girl, u work for CCCS? What is a DMP?

A DMP is a Debt Management Plan have a look here - http://www.cccs.co.uk/faqs/debt.htm#debta however this would only be worthwhile IF he had an outside relative who was willing to make the £5 per creditor minimum deposit on his behalf.

However if you call our helpline on 0800 138 1111 and let them know the situation they will be able to fill you in a lot better.

My experience is that if you contact all of your creditors now with something along the lines of -

    Dear Creditor

I am writing to inform you that as of the “Date” I will be incarcerated at “name of prison and address” until “expected release date”. I would be extremely grateful if you would freeze my account and I shall contact you immediately upon my release.
