cancelling a flight

My son has booked a flight to Seattle USA in September as he planned to spend three months travelling. He has now been offered a once in a lifetime job in London and so it looks like the travel will have to be postponed. Obviously he knows he is likely to forfeit the money he spent on the flight but what are the options - could he sell the flight (or even give it) to a friend. I've googled and can't find any clear information. Thanks for any advice.

All depends on the airline and the rules of the fare he bought. If it was a non-refundable ticket he may still be able to claim the taxes back.
Best to look at the airlines website - there is normally something under FAQs relating to name changes

He probably needs to contact Opodo. I needed to change a flight with United Airlines booked through NetFlights. United were willing to make the change, but couldn't do it as it was booked through a third party.

Icelandair are usually the cheapest airline flying across the pond but their own websits says the lowest economy fares can be cancelled before departure at a cost of 50% of the orginal fare, which is a lot more generous than most other airline! Having said that I wouldn't want to fly that far without a meal which does not come included on Icelandair!
