loopsTHE CHAINS OF HABIT ARE TOO WEAK TO BE FELT UNTIL THEY ARE TOO STRONG TO BE BROKEN... :A0 -
Despite bleach cleaning my wheelie bin after the fortnightly collection the smell still lingers and then builds up again over the next fortnight.
I'll try the Jeyes fluid suggestion next.
I'm also double-bagging my rubbish (not very MSE) using scented bags and as I buy the bags on the local market they're still cheaper than the shops.
I can't use my pressure washer due to the hosepipe ban.0 -
We have had the same problem, we keep getting maggots in the bin despite dh cleaning it out every fortnight and I keep putting dustbin powder in, spraying fly spray, I don't know what else to do to keep the maggots out, I always put my rubbish in bags and tie them up but still we keep getting the dam things. They should empty the bins weekly in the summer time.0

We have fortnightly collections beginning in October. When the council first mentioned it there was an outrage and petitions, however they had none of it and now we will have the same problem next summer... Gross.
They should definitely do it more often in the summer - isn't it a health and safety issue? Imagine if they spilt a bag or two on your drive? Clean that up.:wall:0 -
I just pour in a bottle of Value Bleach once a year - no need to empty itstill raining0

It was the 'no need to empty it' bit that got my attention. Never occured to me. I'll do that on Friday. Pretty poor service to collect so infrequently!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

just to say they have dirt devil pressure washers in sainsburys for 9.99 at the moment if your paying £2 a week it will pay for its self in 5 weeks or you could undercut the bin cleaners and charge your neighbours a poundHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. It will kill the grass, but it'll grow back. You can reduce it's strength by diluting it with even more water.
If you have a paved area, tip it out there - it'll kill any weeds lurking between the pavingWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
I think I would lose my mind if our council went to fortnightly collections.
I wash my bin every week. I throw in some thin bleach. Then, I squirt some thick bleach around the sides. Then, I make a bucket of hot water with a bit of Flash in it and pour that in. I use an old mop to swab the whole thing out, then wheel it out to the grass and tip it out. This doesn't seem to harm the grass. This week, with the super-hot weather, I left it sitting out open in the sun all afternoon to allow the sun to do its natural disinfecting and to get it completely dry inside. We used to keep the bin right outside our back door but now we keep it down the garden a bit.
This may not be money-saving, but if controlling odor is your main concern, perhaps some double-bagging would help. We put all poopie nappies into grocery bags and double up the bag, then twist and tie in a knot. Then, they go into a regular bin liner. Perhaps you could have a seperate, small nappie bin for this purpose? (Or, try a Diaper Genie. They really do work!) Do the same sort of thing with food waste. Finally, double-bag your trash with an extra bin liner. Perhaps you could use the heavy-duty bin liners that are designed for lawn clippings/heavy trash. Like I said, this isn't frugal and may seem bad for the environment, but stench, maggots, and flying ants is ample justification, IMO.:beer:0
