Ok, where i live they only empty my bin every other week. With the hot weather and all baby nappies and rubbish being kept in the bin for upto 2 weeks my bin REALLY stinks and to make it worse it is swamped in flying ants - you can smell it as soon as i go in my garden.
My neighbours tell me they have maggotts in there !

Dont you have a wheelie bin cleaning service ??
They come around every two weeks after the bin has been emptied and pressure wash it for around £1.50 - £2..
If you dont have one local maybe there's a wee business oppertunity for you..
I prefer to clean mine myself with a bit of bleach and a kettle full of boiling water, after a 1/2 hour os so empty it out and bag the rubbish that comes out with the water..0 -
No there isnt one. We have said we are going to give it a clean but it stinks really bad and i have to wait till friday - does anyone else have this fortnightly collection ?0

Yes, our bins are only emptied every two weeks too
We've had the same problem as yourself...and again someone up our road did have maggots in theres too......in this hot weather i'm not really surprised though.
I wash ours out every time it is emptied yet it still smells
I think a pressure washer does sound a good idea, but quite expensive just to be able to wash the bins out properly.0 -
I'm suprised you dont have a wheelie bin cleaning service. It's a lucrative business that can net the operator several hundred pounds for a few days work a week (if he/she has a good run). Most of the guys i know that do it are 'one man bands' but i know of one franchising company that may have an operative near you (or may not).best bet is to contact them and await a response http://www.vipbincleaning.com/
if that fails as i said a nice we earner for someone willing to put the time in and build a run up.0 -
Jeyes Fluid will do the trick. I like it as the smell lingers for days afterwards and will mask any new smelliness from the rubbish. It's an acquired smell (Jeyes), but to me, it's a clean smell.
Zoflora is another option, but I can't stand the smell of that.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
The council here insisted we took two huge wheely bins earlier this year despite us having no where to store them. The 'rubbish' bin is now sitting in the front garden smelling (as we said it would) so bad that I can't keep the front door open to let in some cooler air!
I can't wait for Monday when they empty the damn thing (it's smelt for four weeks now - presumed the smell would go when they emptied it two weeks ago but no such luck so I had to wait for another two weeks!) and I can take your advice ref the Jeyes fluid. Can I just ask, once I've cleaned it, can I simply empty the water and the fluid onto the grass? Or will it kill it?

Yes, I have exactly the same problem.Stompa0 -
I put a mix of bicarb and shakenvac in my bin, after I've give it a scrub with boiled water and stardrops. I always make sure all rubbish in bagged and tied, this seems to keep mine smelling tip top, although we get our bins emptied an a weekly basis.RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.
