i've never heard of a building company that doesnt pay overtime as builders are usually on a contract that says they are paid by the hour. the companies may well be charging customers less per hour for their services and therefore need to work longer hours to make a profit but they will still be paying the workers for it unless they are cowboys.

I think you will find that many building companies use subbies, who rarely work "cards in" most work self employed on a "day rate" which would be job and finish so are not really a good comparison example imho. This is true when a fair few builders are using migrant labour, and the dayrates have been significantly reduced. But that is a different topic.

Any member of my team who insisted on attending only for their contracted hours would soon find me insisting that they worked at 100% workrate for every single second they were in the office. No visits to the vending machine, no chats, no personal phone calls etc etc. I'm not in favour of working long hours so that one can be seen to be doing so, but if the work demands a 'bit extra' from time to time and employees are not willing to put themselves out once in a while...well, there are a few million people who would much rather have their job.

There are plenty of us in retail who when we are paid to work have to work hard, there simply aren't distractions like mobile phones, vending machines or even drinks or toilets.

Perhaps the difference is one of culture. In retail you generally get a morning and afternoon break as well as a lunch break...these are usually unpaid of course. OTOH in offices there might be just a lunch break then no structured morning or afternoon breaks. This might look better to the employee as they still get (unofficial) breaks and this time is paid for, but if they end up faffing around all afternoon then have to stay late this doesn't really benefit the company or the employee. Perhaps it might be better to implement adequate breaks then stop employees wandering around at other times and using their mobiles so that everyone leaves on time?

Happy Work Your Proper Hours Day.

Really interesting comments so far, hope you all have a good day today. Did you take all breaks & leave on time? Or did you work more hours than they pay you to?

I'm actually on leave today :). Interestingly(?) since I did a ~12hour day yesterday 1/2 is holiday & 1/2 is time of in lieu.
However the "grown-ups" who did the same day but are on ~3x my salary don't get the TOIL
  • Really interesting thread OP :)
I have an office based job (logistics) so it's sometimes easier to get in earlier than I am contracted to but I always leave on time. Always. I won't stay over; if my line manager wants to then thats fine but he doesn't get in the office until 9.30 -10 am most days so I'm justified in this as far as I'm concerned.
Based on that calculator in the first post though - I'd quite like a raise :D Or I may just start taking a full lunch hr instead :D

My example was an extreme example but I am sure that there will be a company that are working on a price and the workers know that not doing the extra hours could adversely affect the company. As I said for a short period of time to help a company through is fine, if work got better then maybe I wouldn't expect to work for free

there was a feature about the issue on working lunch today. check it out on the iplayer when it appears if you are interested.
  • Our manager just told us we could leave an hour early today to go to the pub! Yay to 'work your hours day'

However, i have had several emails saying that one of our clients wants me to work some weekends to meet their unrealistic deadlines. Boo

I have never and will never work extra without being paid extra.

Why should I? what benefit is there for me?

And anybody that does is quite frankly a mug.

Theres one reason and one reason only why somebody works unpaid
overtime, and thats to be a brown noser, and I despise everything those people stand for.

If you cant climb the ladder without doing it, then your not cut out to climb the ladder.

I only work a little extra unpaid OT if I'm honest but my wife works 50+ hours a week like pretty much everone in her office. No OT is payable.

I will ensure that I pass on your pearls of wisdom and that she realises she is inadequate, a 'brown noser' and only worthy of your utter scorn. She will no doubt see the light and quit her post immediately

I guess we might initially miss her 6 figure salary and sizable annual bonus (the taxman will probably miss them too) but it will be worth it knowing she will be able to walk tall amongst the self righteous ranks of the dead eyed quasi-socialist mediocracy.

I guess most people would happily work some "unpaid hours" if they earnt a 6 figure salary and a sizable bonus. Thing is it's the middle men who end up working for peanuts - "Workers" get overtime hourly and at premium rates, the heirachy get a great salary, bonus and pension so dont mind the extra 10 hours, and the rest of us work for !!!!!! all else and get the pleasure of knowing we are working for closer and closer to the NMW week after week.
