I am not alone when I say that to complete all the work I have to do, nowadays I have to work at full speed ahead for 9.5-10 hours per day just to complete my responsibilities. Add a few 10 minute breaks onto that and I'm there for 7:30 - 6pm. Add the motivation of potential performance management if mistakes are made or performance suffers. This does not make for a happy workforce.
By the way, this is for the exact same salary as 4 years ago when I only needed to do maybe half an hour extra a day to complete my tasks.
Employers are taking advantage of the downturn but when it upturns again, people will vote with their feet from poor employers.0 -
I have never and will never work extra without being paid extra.
Why should I? what benefit is there for me?
And anybody that does is quite frankly a mug.
Theres one reason and one reason only why somebody works unpaid
overtime, and thats to be a brown noser, and I despise everything those people stand for.
If you cant climb the ladder without doing it, then your not cut out to climb the ladder.0 -
I work 9-5. Last year a boss said to me as I entered the 3rd year of my college training "you know you should be staying late to do more work", I replied "I'm afraid I've got to get back to my dog".
Sometimes I'm there until 5.30, but it's only because I like to finish off what I'm doing.0 -

What about a company that is struggling, people work overtime there for non purely because if the company goes pop they have no job.
So not just 1 reason huh!Always ask ACAS0 -

But surely if a company needs overtime worked then they have business coming in?
If any company cant afford to pay for overtime then It's not really a business.
Or are they just operating at a loss and dragging out the inevitable, in which case I would
rather jump than be taken down with a sinking ship.
I would rather see an unprofitable company go under rather than see people taken advantage of.
Would you really work for free for a failing company? I don't know many that would.0 -

I would work for my wage and if I had to put extra hours in for a short period of time then I would do it.
For example because of the recession alot of builders, electricians etc have cut their prices, so their margins are tighter which means that whilst they may have work in to keep paying the normal wage of its workers they may require the workers to put a bit extra in until business picks up
I would think that is a fair reason to do the extra work (obviously if things pick up then I would expect to be paid for it)Always ask ACAS0 -
Working in a call centre where everything is to the second makes this very easy!:D0

Problem is that the "long hours" culture is now ingrained into the psyche of most of the workforce (not the shirkforce minority), and employers capitalise on this (no disrespect intended to jdturk), and it is usually a minority of employers that take the p**s, as most workers will willingly go the extra mile to protect theirs and colleagues jobs when the need arises.
Also with cost of living increasing rapidly beyond inflation, many on or just above NMW depend on the overtime to survive. Unfortunately although laudable, this day is doomed imho.
The employers who do take advantage, had better hope Gordon and his badger don't lurk on these fora, because he may just try to levy some form tax on the value of all those unpaid hours, the black hole needs more cash to pay the diversity consultants and coordinators.0
