Making cards - Ideas for beginners (part 4)

Thanks both of you.
My little boy starts school in September and as I'm a German teacher and have spent lots of time there, I've always thought I'd like to follow the German tradition of a 'Schultuete' or a 'School cone' for him when he starts. The tradition basically is that each child has a large cone made from card and decorated nicely, and the parents fill it with sweets, stationery for school and small toy treats to make their first day at school special.
There's an image here of the kind of thing I'm looking for, although I'd like it to be done to a specific theme to match his school bag and lunch bag and personalised with his name and school start date etc. I also don't mind if it's just a straighforward 'cone' instead of having the straight edges like these have. The main issue is the size. They are usually about 60 or 70cm tall with a diameter of 20 or 25cm at the opening. the top looks like material but I thought it could be done with a strong crepe paper maybe?
I'd love it if someone thought they could help at all-it's something I've always thought I'd be able to get for him quite easily but I'd have to buy from Germany and having it personalised too, then postage costs on top would make it too expensive.
Thank you ever so much in advance for anything any of you feel you could do/tell me about to help!

Rusty, I was having a dim moment when you asked me about the Star Wars t-shirt DS1 was wearing. Did you mean the pale blue one or the black one? The pale blue one was from Next and the black one was from M&S, both bought in the last couple of months. Does that help? Hope you're feeling a bit better xxx
DS already has the blue one from Next... I shall have to accidently take a trip to M&S thankyou xxx feeling better? not really ... I am soooooo ill that I ironed earlier!!
CAUTION. For those of you who may be thinking of sharing your images please be very cautious of who you give the link to. Some images are copyrighted and you may not legally be able to even share those with others through a link to a photo album. I think the regulars on here will remember what happened to someone who did that to help us out and got into some bother. If you haven't been here for that long, please check with rainmac, Rusty, dragonllew, padster, marg or whoever's got a lot of posts and please check with them as to who you may be giving the link, I am positive they will help you. I would hate to see you have problems when you are being so kind. If they are sent as a gift through the post well, that's nobody elses business.
I did think about this, but not till after I posted about it  I remember what happened!! she doesn't come on anymore...
Thanks both of you.

That sounds lovely!! Maybe you could do it with some kind of cutter i.e a craft robo, if you made a template for each side and attatched them on the inside so they *stuck* Not sure how big you could get one though? You would have to probably go quite big to get the kind of size you are looking for! which in turn would cause problems for papers as the biggest patterned paper you can get is 12x12. Sounds easy enough in theory to make up, but not sure about the sizes! Could you not have a few of them? a new one for each year and have them smaller? my thoughts there are that if it is made from card then it may not last several years of use! whereas you could possibly try and make it last a year then replace it with a new one? also stops it looking tatty from use!Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Thanks Rusty.
The traditional German ones are large ones and that's what I'd really like although I know the size is an issue. It's only used once when they start in Reception, then they just keep it as a keepsake, so it wouldn't get tatty or anything. I wouldn't mind it being one plain colour, but then with nice pictures and wording etc. attached separately, but as I've said I'm really not a crafter at all and couldn't even contemplate doing it myself unfortunately. I'll see if any willing soul comes along and has a burning desire to have a go for me (:D), but if not, I might have to give up on the idea...at least he doesn't know I'm even thinking about it so won't be disappointed!
Thanks again.

CG I don't think it's against forum rules to post a request like yours. Can you give us some idea about what you are aiming to achieve because someone might be able to direct you to what you are looking for.
DTB you've been missed
Aaaw thanks - I'm hoping to be back with a vengeance now my eyes seem to be behaving themselves a bit more - I even have a card on the go!
And I honestly truthfully posted the parcels for the people waiting for them today - work messed my brilliant plan to do it earlier in the week up by removing all our access to blogs and forums (altho they don;t seem to have cottoned o to this one yet - I think I'll have to go on strike if they try!) so I couldn't get on to check addresses and I'd mislaid my list. Found it yesterday.
My boy came back from a residential camp today - he's only been in the house 1 night since the school holidays started - so the washing machine is working overtime. Maybe I'll get that card finished later on..........0 -

My sister teaches in Germany and I remember seeing them in the windows of the stationery shops but had no idea what they were for - I asumed they were some kind of party favour / pinata thing.
I'll have a word with her tonight and see if she has any thoughts.0
