Sewing machines........definitely worth sticking an ad on Freecycle/Freegle in the off-chance someone's having a clear-out.
My sewing machine was my 21st birthday present....my God how times have changed. My 21st birthday pics have me in a dress I made myself and a cardi I knitted myself!!! I look OK too, I think!!!
It saw me through years and years and finally gave up the ghost when I was doing loads of curtain-making as a sideline when I was a SAHM. I got rid a good few years ago, but my yearning for another halter-neck cotton maxi dress has reminded me how easy they are to run-up and wishing I still had mine. I prob won't buy one as I know I won't use it use it much but will defo chance my arm on Freegle!!0 -
Went into our local sewing machine shop for their "friendly advice and great range" to be practically laughed out of the shop with my budget, told that it was a waste of money getting a second hand one or a lower price one and was told to ask DH for more money. I was so miffed that I headed straight to the garden centre for a pick me up splurge, bought rosemary, thyme and sage plants.
Horrid, and probably not true. e.g. my sewing machine was my mum's and I think she used it about 6 times. I could never have justified the expense , and I have barely used it because I find it so tiresome to thread: I have a hatred of bobbins and the tension always drives me mad. Most things I do are repairs and as quick to do by hand.
I wouldn't get rid of it, but I'd be happy to let a friend borrow it, maybe coming to my house to use it. Any chance a friend or relative near by has one you can borrow?0 -
Vicki, what's freecycle like in your area? I've heard of a lot of people getting sewing machines on there.
Ours came from Lidl of all places!0 -

It's a good idea, but I remember sewing machines as having their individual quirks and idiosyncracies, getting the tension and everything else set just right then not twiddling any knobs!! I remember borrowing my mum's, which was the identical model to mine, but it "handling" in a different way and always being rather nervous about messing it up in someway.0 -

This is why I'm not keen, Bronnie summed it up better than I ever could! My mum is so precious over her machine that she sets it all up etc and she hovers over me the whole time and I get really nervous!
I have a few friends with machines but I can see it being an equally unpleasant experience especially with my rubbish sewing!
I'm really tempted to get the basic Argos value one and test it out in the next few weeks. I expect if it's awful they'd let me have a refund as it wouldn't be fit for purpose? The reviews seem pretty good and I'm ashamed to admit it but I like the pretty blue colour on it0 -

TBH I don't blame her completely because there's nothing more frustrating than starting to sew and the machine starts playing -up and you can be messing round for ages trying to sort it.....but that's not the best way for you to progress either!!

Have you got a link to the Argos one? (sorry if you've already posted it)0 -
Yes, Bronnie, this is it

although I agree with all of this, we did it at school.....using the same shared machines, having to adapt things for us each time we went into class.
icky, the argos machine is pretty! I have a friend who uses an old hand turn Singer..not even foot pedal!0
