shwmae! greetings from a newbie in sunny wales  I hear you girls are very stylish and friendly so I thought I'll be a little thick skin and barge in here for some help on an outfit I'm planning to wear tomorrow night for a formalish dinner (not black tie formal, its a bollywood theme apparently, but host said cocktail dress is fine) hope you girls dun mind :A

the dress I have is something like this (pic nicked from ebay, my house is not that tidy!)
    balckhalterdress.jpg

as I'm a young-ish thirty-someting shortie (abt 5'1 I think) with short legs (long torso) size 16/14 the dress ends kind of just above mid calf if that makes sense.... and I'm going to wear it with a skirt that has netting underneath to create a swing/prom dress effect...

black opaque tights and here's the problem.. shoes.. I just bought this from DP and thought they might go, give the dress an edge so to speak
    greyshoeboots.jpg

I have no formal heels or shoes that aren't strappy sandals that's going to freeze my toes off. so its either these or biker boots, or black platform boots or black mary jane types with chunky sole and heels that look suspiciously like what teenage girls wear to sch (actually I did buy them from the kiddie section so they probably are girls' heels) I'm not very good with heels you see. I'm usually in my biker boots or fitflop mukluk boots or walking trainers/boots...

what do you stylish girls think abt the shoe-boots with the dress? I've sent DH to see if the DP in town where he works has a black pair in my size as I think maybe it being in grey will visually chop off more legs that I can afford? I did wear the full gear and looked in the mirror and thought it didn't look too bad but I might just be too blinded by the new shoes :o

also I have 2 choices for the top to cover up my less than ideal upper arms :oand to keep me a little warmer... either a fluffly woolly white scraf I got for christmas or this little chifon number
    whitechifontop.jpg
I have this in black and ivory.. just thought ivory would be a nice contrast to the black dress and tights :D

any advice greatly appreciated :p hope you girls dun mind a newbie barging straight in with this

    Hi and Welcome!

Very nice outfit...how long is the dress though? its hard to tell from pics. If its longer than knee length I dont think the ankle boots will go...the Mary Janes sound more promising. If its a short dress though then go with the boots as it will give it an edge like you said.

ETA oops just read your post properly! I would go with the Mary Janes- Im sure the others will say opposite though lol- have you got a pic of them? Im sure they arent schoolgirlish and if they are play up to that!

    Morning everyone

Lovely, bright and sunny here, good opportunity to get some washing out.

Still in PJs and dressing gown. Baby awake a lot of the night with a cold but she is asleep now.

Bought Look Magazine yesterday - there is a lovely Dorothy Perkins 'statement' butterflies and blooms necklace in it but at £50 I think it is too pricey!

    Have a nice day everyone

£50!! I got my gold butterfly necklace for £2.00 from ebay!

I would go with Mary Janes too. The boots will make your legs look really short as you will only be showing a few inches of legs.

    Welcome to the thread!

Morning guys, wow this thread moves fast don't it?

Well, I was getting dressed this morning and had on black work pants, black long sleeved soft T shirt, black flats and I thought about you lot and went back upstairs and got changed!
Now: dark grey wide leg smart work pants (New look), with floaty empire line 3/4 sleeve tunic in black, grey, orange, purple and green (monsoon - via charity shop) sounds vile but its quite nice. It had a very deep V so have a stretchy vest underneath.
Got my high wooden wedge mary jane style shoes on (clarks sale) (as I was too lazy to take the trousers up), and my own long purple glass earrings in.
Think I did quite well for my first attempt? :)

Siaoeh - thos boots are fab.

thanks for the welcome and the advice so far girls

here's other black shoes I have.. both very school girlish :rotfl: its a dinner in the masonic hall so school girl look might be a bit :o

    maryjanes.jpg
    loafers.jpg

the first one isn't too comfy as its a tad big hence the sticky back suede thingy I had stuck in there.. might show with black tights and dress? I usually wear it for work with trousers...

the second pair.. well... its super chunky and well, more like moccassins or loafers? :o

re the grey shoe boots, it looks nicer than I can ever imagine actually, maybe cos its quite low rise, my ankles are still visible
    shoebootwithleg.jpg

I never thought my short legs would allow me to wear them ankle boots till I saw this yesterday :D

the dress ends kind of just under the knee cap, maybe 2 or 3 inches below?

maybe I'll go and wear it all and take a pic later :o

    keep them coming please...

thanks kandi, I was surprised at how it actually looked okay on my short legs! they didn't have the safe black I would have normally gone for in my size, but I do quite like the grey.. it was on sale too! 15 quid from DP in my local... fingers crossed DH can get me a black one to mull over :rotfl:women and shoes! :o
