Your health cover runs out because you lose your job, or refuses to cover you and you are in a whole heap of sh*t very quickly.
Is that a ridiculous generalisation, or is that true?

I was responding to your generalisation about middle class life, not health insurance. Middle class life includes health insurance. In California the poor have access to what is called 'MediCal' which is free(ish) and similar to our NHS. It can be hard for people who are not poor but who don't have insurance, and Obama is trying to address this. On the whole, though, I still maintain that the overall quality of life for middle class people is much higher there than here, and we were sorry to have to come home. This was what I was trying to get across to the OP against some negative comments from people who have never lived there.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
