changing gas and electric in a rented house..

Options
Hey guys,

We moved into our rented terraced house in December and have decided to change supplier, have been on the uswitch website and our cheapest option would be to go with scottish power energy saver 9 which would give us an annual bill of around £550. I have read though that if you are in rented accomodation you should go with the cheapest "standard" tariff because you wont be able to switch supplier again. Can anyone give me any advice?

thanks

Not true. Just change to whichever tariff you like. Switching penalties etc DO NOT apply to any subsequent tenants. They start their own brand new contract with a different default tariff. I'm not sure why you think you would not be able to switch again.

(I am assuming, of course, that the contracts are in your own name.)
  • Yeh the tenancy agreement is in our name and so would the gas and electric contract! I just read that I should choose a standard tariff as I won't be able to switch in the future! That's good news then if we can pick the best tariff for us! Also do we need to inform the landlord bwfore we move?

It depends what is in your tenancy agreement. Mine simply asks that I notify them "as soon as reasonably possible" after switching. My previous flat's agreement said I had to get their permission, but they never refused (in fact, they didn't really care).
