Why do we still have 1p & 2p?

  • In New Zealand the smallest denomination is a 10c. The shops still charge $1.99, 49c etc but everything is rounded up or down to the nearest 10c.

The 5p is the modern version of the old 1/2p.

Perhaps it is time to move the decimal point one place, so £1 is worth ten times as much, but takes ten times as long to earn.
    Been away for a while.

My sister missed the cut off point for handing the old 50p's into the bank. The numpty then took one of those circular chipboard tables and glued all the 50 pence pieces to the top. She must've had at least £100 of coins stuck onto a £5 table.

I've never seen anyone waste money so needlessly!
  • I would imagine the answer is due simply to heritage.

I can't imagine 1p and 2p coins to stick around forever. Quite a lot of countries have abolished their own 1 cent (1/100th) equivalent.

However, the UK is rather fetishistic about its 99p - under a quid, don'tcha know! - purchases.

No wonder we're in such an economic pickle... from which we've apparently recovered. Sure. ;-)
Long live the faces of t'wunty.

They are for women (especially those in the elderly subvariety) to search for in their purses, when you are in the queue behind them in the shop and are in a rush.
