Get a copy of cyclecraft and get yourself onto a forum such as cyclechat or bike radar and into the beginners and commuting sections for support. you might even meet some local fellow cyclists!
Good luck!0 -

Here are some rules: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069837
If you are on the road, you must comply with the Highway Code too. It's not optional... that's why drivers shout at cyclists.
Its also illegal to drive on the pavement, and yet I see thousands of cars parked...on the pavement.0 -
Just wanted to come back and update the thread should any other would be cycle commuters read it.
I've been commutting (albeit only three miles each way) for two weeks now, I'm really saddle sore and my newly acquired padded cycle shorts do diddly squat to relieve it but apart from that I'm really enjoying getting to work in about ten minutes flat.
Had to cycle to and from work in nasty rain today with soaking wet face and water dripping off my helmet which wasn't a pleasant experience but its really working out well. Thanks once again for all the support and advice.

Good for you! Three miles in Sheffield is good going, got some big hills there!
My tip for the summer, get some sunglasses to keep the bugs out of your eyes.0 -
Well done on becoming 'one of us'.
If you really are saddle sore after just 3 miles each way, I'd suggest it's time to investigate new saddles as yours obviously doesn't 'fit'. Contrary to common sense, big padded ones and certainly gel ones are NOT comfortable - as soon as you use them for any period of time.
Still, keep it up, it can only get better as you get fitter and the weather gets better!0 -

Welcome to the clubI got soaked today too...
If you find your ride stays uncomfortable, consider your saddle - I was given a 2nd hand ladies saddle, a good one, and it was a revelation. A bit like this one (which I know is pricy)

What about becoming less of a fanny?0 -
Saddle soreness should disappear after a week, as suggested your saddle may be at fault.
I use this on my mtb:

Never found a more comfortable saddle.0 -
I've been doing a 35 mile round trip into Liverpool and Home for almost 3 years.
Saddle soreness soon goes.
I have to echo an earlier post that following some of the excellent info on sites like Bike Radar is well worthwhile.
My trip takes me around 15 minutes longer than it does by car and although the rain can be unpleasant, my biggest bug bear is riding into wind, especially on the journey home. Wouldn't swap the bike ride for anything though.
Stick in there and your fitness levels will improve quicker than using anything you can find in the gym.0
