OTOH if I was asked for mileage after I had sold a vehicle I'd tell em 872,783 and on it's second way around the clock.

Thank you for contacting us regarding the above correspondence you received. We have been investigating the reason for your receiving this letter and it has been confirmed that the wrong registration number was entered by the garage that raised the investigation.

They have apologised for this error and we in turn would like to extend our apologies. Our records have been updated accordingly and you can dispose of the letter now.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Yours sincerely

  • contact NMR and ask them to confirm what details they hold as it could be a clerical error.

  • The National Mileage Register is an unregulated mess that can totally destroy the value of your car or bike.
My car has a mileage that is verified by VOSA (all MOTs) and a full service history but somewhere along the line a wrong entry has been entered making the mileage massively wrong.
If you checkout the internet this is a common problem but it is virtually impossible for you to get the NMR to rectify this.
Basically after you sell a car you get a letter asking you to send the mileage to the NMR. If you fell out with the person you sold the car to you could enter a much higher mileage and thus devalue the car maybe by many thousands of pound!!!!!
When I sold my last car I forgot to send the letter back. I got a second letter months later. I could have made a guess at the mileage and perhaps got it wrong or put any random mileage to stop being pestered by NMR,
The NMR has to be regulated and there needs to be a way of correcting errors whether typo's or deliberate errors to mislead.

Try contacting the firm with the details you find ONLINE not the details on the letter and see if you can get confirmation of the letter being sent from them via the phone call, if not then ignore as it is most likely a scam

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I did a search on the National Mileage Register and this came up.

We have just received a letter today about our car, we bought it in August 2011 and according to the letter disposed of it early December 2011. Its sat in my driveway and we have no intention of selling it.

Has anyone else any experience with this and would it could mean?
  • yes the OP above had experience with this

the OP then updated with how they handled it

OP updated AGAIN with the final result

  • I think this is the company that a few years ago sent me a letter asking me for the mileage of a car I had recently sold. I wrote back to them asking how much they were going to pay me for supplying this information, as presumably they were going to sell the information I had provided.

    I never got a reply!
