Any recommendations ?
Which one performs the best ?
Which is the coolest ? ( temperature wise - not looks :rotfl: )
Which is the quietest ? ( Is this really an issue ?? )
:T
i have buffalo,samsung,iomega and WD
the iomega seems the coolest using the high tech back of the hand on case test
none seem any noisier than the rest really
havent really done any tests on speeds but all manage to stream 1080p video over a gigabit network with on the fly transcoding0 -
I have the Iomega Professional: on/off switch, reasonably quiet, reasonably cool, certainly nothing to be concerned about IMO. I dislike the WD MyBooks but always a matter of opinion on this forum
.
So is the main difference between the Professional and the Prestige the eSATA connection ( and £12 in price :rotfl: )?
:T Nice drive by the way - and some very good reviews :T“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -

:T Thank you - very useful information
I do like the "high tech" use of the back of the hand “That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -
just did a check, all my external drives are running cooler than my internal drives using crystaldiskinfo
my internals are 60/52 o C
my externals are between 37 to 47 o C
however my main PC is a laptop hybred type unit so temps are higher than on desktops with towers0 -

Dear Forum ,
As an OAP cheapskate I bought an E-Bay second hand Samsung 80G 3.5" drive delivered for £7.50 and installed it into a similarly sourced £12.00 caddy with an separate power lead and on/off switch and USB connection and I just power it on when needed . No problem , and the caddy will support any capacity of IDE drive ,0 -

thats great, but 80gb aint gonna cut it for most
the price per GB vs a 1000GB drive for under £60 makes it less MSE than you think
plus IDE is slower than the sata drives used nowadays0 -
Thanks to busenbust for directing me to this thread.
I'm after a external hard drive, almost exclusively for films. Budget £70 max, so I know I should be able to get something decent. Running XP Home.
Had also been thinking of upgrading my faithful Inspiron 510m laptop which must be five or six years old but then my money saving instinct set in and I wondered wheter an external hard drive would do instead: much, much cheaper. However, with the the advance in technology since I first bought would my Inspiron support an external drive, especiall a 1T drive?
I like the thought of a 1T , that should keep me going in films for a while! And to easily carry it about that would be a bonus. I have a few Amazon gift vouchers left from Christmas so I could spend them there.I'd be glad to hear suggestions
Kevin
ps but I will buy a new laptop in the near future: have my eye on the Dell Studio 15 and the bank is in the black

bear in mind the 3.5" drives (like this) need mains power as well as USB
not an issue on a desktop but its possibly an issue for those on a laptop
is this your model?

if so it should be USB 2 so no issues on the external drive0 -
