OP are you considering writing a book for this age group? I only ask as I have a 12 year old DD and having read some of the things that the previous posters with children in the younger end of the age bracket have posted, there is a lot of difference to what she enjoys. If you were writing a book I do know that they tend to put the age range 9 - 12, but they change an awful lot during these 3/4 years!
  • I teach 37, 9 and 10 year olds and have a brother who just turned 12.

What books do they enjoy reading?
Some of them can barely read, most boys that can are into beast quest type stuff, girls very variable.

Do they have any favourite games (from outside with firends, to on a Playstation)?
Manhunt, top trumps, making up dances/plays, yu-gi-oh cards, drawing.

How do they enjoy spending their free time?
    Very variable.

What do they spend their money on, e.g magazines (if so which ones), sweets etc?
My brother- footballs. Kids i teach- no idea

    Do they have any hobbies?
    Yes, anything and everything.

What are their favourite school subjects?
Everyone will give you a different answer. I recently made my boys fall in love with country dancing so it depends on the teacher too.

Any school projects which they have really enjoyed and wanted to know more about?
Recently very interested in the actual workings of the body (heart, lungs etc) and also the effects of fat and smoking on things.

Hi Patchwork Cat. I am writing a childrens book but this is research for my characters; a girl and boy and I think one will be about 11 and the other about 9. They need a lot of work, and their interests/hobbies form a big part of the plot so I want to make sure they are right.

You are right though, I do need to make sure I know the age I am targeting as they change/grow so much at that age. :T

Almost 10 year old girl: 'typical girl' but very mature in personality

Books - anything, but feminine taste. LOVES books and reads several a week, often on the go at the same time. Classics, Jacqueline Wilson, Lauren StJohn, Harry Potter, Fairies, Non-Fiction, Shakespeare etc. Reads the Bible, the dictionary; anything!

Games - doesn't have a favourite but happily plays Monopoly, 20Q, DS etc.
Free time - TV plus still loves playing schools, with Barbies & Sylvanians. Crafting. Loves spending time with animals and looking after younger siblings of friends; a natural babysitter.

Money gets spent on toys. Currently saving for Bear Factory clothes.
Hobbies - knitting, sewing, gardening, reading, hockey, Brownies, piano
School subjects - Maths; she'd do it all day if she could. Hates homework.

TV Shows - anything on the Disney channel - Hannah Montana, Suite Life etc. Also Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice.

8 year old girl: sporty active type.
Books - Horrid Henry, joke books, Animal Ark, anything by !!!!!! King Smith. Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Really enjoyed the kids Shakespeare books, the Silly Rhyme series, fables and poetry. And kids Bible stories. Sadly (for her) did not really take to Beast Quest. Also enjoyed Captain Underpants; I never thought I'd buy such stuff - she is very lucky to be my second child and not my first!;)

Games - loves them! Board game fan. Imaginative play pro. Also loves Mario Kart on the DS, Lego Star Wars, battle strategy games on the PC, Club Penguin

Free time - all of the above plus playing schools, lego, building dens, cycling, anything active and involving friends. Very easy going, loyal and fun person to hang out with.
Money - excellent at saving. Spends on Club Penguin cards, Pokemon, occasional toy.
Hobbies - Arts & crafts, writing poems and stories, belongs to netball, football, tennis and hockey teams. Also swims.

School subjects - Art, PE, PSHE, DT, writing. Not a huge fan of school; would rather stay home, although extremely conscientious. May be related to incredibly high IQ (extremely gifted)

TV Shows - not a huge fan of TV, but enjoys Tom & Jerry, Simpsons, You've Been Framed type programmes occasionally. Enjoys movies.

Loves anything to do with space and planets. Favourite book ever was a Non-Fiction space book.

    HTH.
