errors after running Scandisk

Options
on windows xp on my dell laptop....

going through ....

start.....
my computer......
local disk C .. right click .....
then Properties .....
tools........
Error Checking.

takes an hour or so to go through that .. then it re-starts the machine.

As that point i'm getting lots of boxes with system errors ...." unknown hard disk errors " ..
like
aol acsd.exe
wzqkpick.exe
mscorsvw.exe

there is either an "ok" or "cancel" box..

can anyone enlighten me as to the problem and cure ?

could you be more specific, what does the error say?

When was the last time you did a backup?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • the small box is headed "unknown hard disk error"

only back ups i do are files/folders onto a cd every week.

Clutching at straws here but try a virus check.

Are those exes you quoted spelt like that? They look a bit odd to me but I could be wrong.
    :A
  • i do all the virus etc daily , nothing there.
The spelling is exactly as was.
  • Not an expert on this by any means but found this information just by "Googling". Other, more expert people than myself, could suggest what your problem really is.

Description: ACSd.exe is a component of AOL. It is process running in the background and it automatically reconnects you to AOL if you are being disconnected.

Recommendation: Not a critical component, but see the information above before disabling it.

Description: Wzqkpick.exe is the tray bar process for WinZip. The process is used to access WinZip from the tray bar. To save resources this process can safely be removed.

Recommendation: Not a critical component, but see the information above before disabling it.

Description: mscorsvw.exe is a process which belongs to the Microsoft .NET Framework. This program is non-essential process to the running of the program, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Recommendation: Should not be disabled, required for essential applications to work properly.

before running scandisk its normaly good to run chec disk as well, open a command prompt(start ->run-> cmd)

then type "chkdsk /f" it will ask to lock drive blah blah... press Y for yes then restart and it will check you drive . then try scandisk again :-)
  • pierceuk... tried the ...........chkdsk /f..........but computer didn't recognise it.

    i'm on windows xp.

    It is start run cmd
chkdsk c: /F/R (spaces are important) - but is probably the same thing you are running (XP doesn't have scandisk).

Your hard disk could be faulty if chkdsk can't repair the problem, so I'd backup anything important just in case.

chkdsk is part of windows as far as i know so it should work fine! i have run it on Windows XP home and professional!

im affraid i cant think of anything else to get that to work. as albertross says it may be worth backing up everything you can now before it is too late!
  • chkdsk c: /F/R..... i used that and it worked ... did the "error checking" routine again.

Hit the same problem ... when it finished and rebooted i got 2 differrent boxes

with red cross and "unknown hard disk error" ....

    power meter:explorer:EXE system error
    and
    AOLAcsd.exe system error.

again the boxes had "ok" and "cancel" buttons .. neither did anything .. couldn't get rid of them and had to resort to turning machine off with on/off button .. rebooted .. now ok.
