I just want to echo what you have all said here. Pay day is a thrill as I can stick money on the debts and update my spreadsheet and signature, but then the rest of the month is a hideous string of poverty-filled days where I can't afford to go out and, even if I could, I don't have the time or energy to do so because I'm out 12 hours a day with my full-time job, and then I work 3-4 hours at my second job every evening. My entire life consists of working, then sleeping, then getting up and working again. Hideous!

I have no life and nothing to look forward to except my DFD, which always seems like a million miles away. I have lost touch with friends because I can never join in with their activities. I now only socialise with people if it involves going to their houses for free nights in, but all of my friends are now leaving the area and I can't afford to get to most of their houses any more! A very lonely and sorry state of affairs indeed.

This whole journey has been a very expensive lesson. I have learned the really hard way.

Well, at least were all in the right place and good that there are a lot of like minded people on here who can share with us, I know that we shouldnt keep beating ourselves up about the debt we are in but somedays you do think, "how the hell did i get to owe that much and what have i got to show for it ?" which is my case was actaully nothing, it still surprises me today when i think about it. Well one thing for sure it didnt take as long to get into debt as its taking me to get out.

Saying that i do get a little buzz when i see the debt coming down each month, might have a little party when i get to £19,999 :)

  • definitely in good company in this forum I'd say. I also almost debt free now (don't hate me), but I'm probably also a lot older! Taken lots of sacrifices and lifestyle changes, and times have been tough. Chin up, all will be fine in the end!

    Hi.
    You are definately not alone.

Each month I can hardly wait fro my salary to hits the bank - get up in the small hours or wait until after midnight on teh due date to check it is in the bank and then 'pay off' a chunk of debt online.

It is like a 'fix'! Then I am flat as a pancake and brooding over my spreadsheet until next reduction event.

I get paid on Thursday and will pay a chunk off the CC. Then I will be down to my final CC and that will be paid off in March. the last few months have been a real trial....I am obsessed with debt busting but not 'enjoying it' and I just want it to be over with.

After CC we have the overdraft and loan to tackle....then I will have to close my spreadsheet forever and start to rediscover conversation and socialising.
  • So true! I am aiming to get my OD, remaining student loans and consolidation loan cleared by Christmas (around £15k in total). Then have another old loan, which I was going to clear too (debt free date would be around August 2011), but at the moment to give myself a bit of a boost have decided to let myself off overpaying it and just see how I feel at the time (who knows, I may even decide to sprint over the finish line and keep going with a grand a month overpayments...).

So Christmas this year is my 'debt-free' date :-) 10 months to go...

Its interesting how some people have basically completely cut there social lives yes its is the quickest way but not always the best. Yes I have made a lot of cutbacks but not right down to the bone and I still have some money for socialising etc.

Just remember its not a race its a journey, there isn't a right or wrong way as long as the figures are reducing.

From the sound of it you are suffering form not having anything to look forward too, maybe treat yourself here and there.

More recently I got a single seater driving experience on the cheap due to last minute deals etc, yes it still cost me some money but it really got a lot out of my system.

To me I am spending a good £800 services debts a month (well over minimums etc) so in my thinking only paying off £700 one month and doing the above is worth it (if you like cars etc).

As I say it may not get you there as quick, but you can still do things. Clearing debts doesn't have to be an 'all in' thing.

  • when i used to get down abou tdebt i made lists, 1 list was a list of free or LS things i could do to pep me up and a 2nd list was a list month by month of things i had acomplished in that month, whether it was doing that DIY job that had been waiting for months, or taking a long walk in a new park or getting tesco coupons for a meal out. when i felt down i could look at this ( i also took photos as a visual reminder) and this made me realise that im not sat like a statue waiting till my DFD, i still manage a life, just sometimes the debt makes you forget that!

    chin up old bean!

:o Same here, I think I have frugal fatigue! I get temporarily excited when I get paid so I can pay a chunk of my debt off, then feel down cos it's just another month of being skint after that and I'm waiting for next month's pay.

Frugal fatigue! Fantastic! Sums up quite a lot.

I'm just echoing others on here really, it's so nice to see that I'm not on my own wishing the days away until I can get the spreadsheets and snowballs and coloured squares out again :o I find myself staring at them hoping that a magical answer I've not seen before will leap from the pages!

I've only been a DFW for 8 months and have a looong way to go, desperately trying not to be impatient but it is so hard. Every breathing moment is spent thinking about money-that shouldn't be how it goes surely!

Good luck in your debt endevours everyone :A
