But no-one is suggesting that chav DOES carry that connotation! Do you see my point? I mean, maybe I'm wrong...certainly I always thought that 'chav' is about chav behaviour, rather than poverty? Just my interpretation though.

In response to other posts, the fridge was on the ward. Very small ward - 7 beds - but it did seem quite nice. They had tea/coffee facilities for patients as well as unlimited toast/bread/butter etc. Certainly one of the nicer wards I have seen.

"Chav" - or indeed, any descriptive word - is only as good, and as useful, as it's accurate. Despite what people might say, one person's understanding of the term is almost certainly different from another's. There's no single, agreed description, so it becomes a catch-all for the less pleasant aspects of our society.

Now that's no bad thing in itself, having a word to clearly and precisely describe any phenomenon. I would, however, contend that there are already plenty of words in the language to describe "ill mannered, missbehaving[sic], white (or whatever colour they may be) trash" - and plenty without also having the additional "chav" connotations of poverty, poor education and deprivation.

And you - like everyone else who uses this word - know this very well. That's why you use the word, and that's why it's that little bit more wounding than, say, "scrote" or "thug" or whatever.

To use the word "chav" is to dehumanise and disrespect another human being, ostensibly attacking them for their actions while in reality basing the assault largely on factors they may not themselves be responsible for. It's disgusting snobbishness and an anachronism; something which I really felt our society had outgrown and left behind.

As I say - you wouldn't use the "N"-word; why use the word "chav"?

That was quite a well reasoned arguement, you obviously like to .... debate.

No perticular ethnic group pops into my head. I might use the term to describe a group of assian louts wearing fake burberry, or a group of drunken stock brokers causing mayhem on a night on the town, or Posh looking ridiculously undernourished wearing some of her high priced tat.

I would suggest poverty, poor education and deprivation are no excuse for anti-social behaviour. My parents were not rich nor well educated but that did not make me a chav.

I do not use the N word or (unlike a certain royal chav) the P word because ........ it is against the law.

Correct terminology;- a man, a woman, a couple, a boy, a girl, a teenager, a child. All perfectly good words to describe the person without value judgements or insults.

And, yes, I hate the word Chav, it is a demeaning and insulting term which labels a whole class of people in a negative way.

2 very different debates going on here

1. The conduct of said people of chavnic origin (disclaimer:chavnic in this term is not used to cluster a specific group of people of any typical or a-typical social, ethnic or educational background, and any attempts to amass a generalistic statement of this particular disclaiming of said chavnic originations, is in direct breach of the chavnic terms of agreement and could render the said generalistic disclaiming liable for chavnisation of chavnic proportions without recourse). Yes people who do this kind of thing are damned ignorant, louts, parasitic, lazy, freeloading scroungers. They will be eating I guess as they probably don't have money left for food after all the fags and booze they have bought from their income support ( or back handed illegal working cash in hand salary whilst still claiming IS) (Disclaimer: by mentioning Income support, I am making no generalization to any section of the population including but not limited to those in receipt of Income Support who are receiving this said benefit through no fault of their own and indeed would rather have a job and work for their living instead of the general chavnic (see disclaimer above) rhetorical regard for the scrounging of said benefit due to the lazy, ignorant, scrounging manner in which they chavtasise themselves). 2nd argument is the political correctness of the word chav (see disclaimer above) and it's wider implications. We are AMAZINGLY stupid with the entire "PC" culture we live in. You can not breath, look at someone or something, read anything, say anything, do anything, without some idiot saying "Ohhh you can not do that, that is not politically correct". Does not matter what state the general living conditions, the fear of getting done for something, getting sued for saying something. It is pathetic

Now before you all start on me, I do not in any way condone or encourage the use of any kind of discriminatory acts. People are people an the sooner we all have a mutual respect for each other (regardless of race, colour, religion, chavnicity) then the better the place will be. But I think the ideal example of the complete stupidity of it all was an article I read in the paper the other morning, where some Human Rights committee had asked for something to be put into an up and coming educational bill, that banned the compulsory wearing of skirts as part of the school uniform, as it was offensive to transsexual pupils. GET A LIFE. It is time we got around to calling a spade a spade, and not something stupid like a digging tool (making no reference to a male sexual organ (and male is used in the dictionary definition of the word and in no way shape or form is meant for discriminatory sense to any dictionary defined male who has undergone gender realignment and now lives as a female) or use of the word as a generalization about the idioticness of particular person) with a generalistic wooden (from sustainable forests) handle with a metal end generally shaped in a rectangle with a sharp end (please read fully and take warning of the health and safety notice on sharp tools (see reference to the word tool above) and use thereof) of no discernable colour incase the user is colourblind, available in left or right handed and of varying lengths as to not discriminate against someone because of their height, and does not in any way conflict with the religious beliefs of any religion know at time of printing

I have no idea why this thread has gone off on such a tangent! Surely the issue is that nobody stopped these people stealing other patients' food? Why did no one stop them? If it was the fear violence, then why did no one call the security guards or the police?

Sorry, but if I had been there and had seen someone take the food that I had brought in for a relative, I would have gone and got it back off them, with a smile and a 'oops, THAT's where that went' and a firm, steely glare to defy them to respond.

That tactic's worked for me for decades. I haven't had my head kicked in yet.

Rather than argue about terminology, why are we not debating the silencing of the witnesses? I can't believe that there wasn't at least one old girl who'd stand up to these theives.....

Nah I have never put anyone on ignore, as sods forum law dictates I will agree with him/her wholeheartedly on another thread, all part of the fun of forums.

There is always someone on here just itching to be offended on another's persons behalf.
