Cancun - Riviera Maya

I've been looking at the 'Sirenis Riviera Maya', it looks really nice and by far the best reviews on trip advisor. A lot of the hotels within Playa Del Carmen do not have great reviews.
I'm going to start looking at playacar now...see what I find in that area0 -
We went to the Riviera Maya for honeymoon in 2008. We stayed at the El Dorado Royale which was amazing. I would definately recommend the Riviera Maya over Cancun - we went into Cancun and I didn't fancy it - too busy/loud/too many "types" IYKWIM. That said it was interesting to take a day trip to. I would love to go back to the Riviera Maya as we had overspent on the wedding and I couldn't do all the things I would have liked on holiday. So I need to go back again...
Another vote for the El Dorado Royale Resort and Spa

I agree with sunshine though - you need to take transport or organised trips/buses into the towns etc. the hotel do run buses and daytrips though.

this is also really good as it give you lots of info on the area and what hotels are in what areas and what surrounding it

Thank you.
I have booked the Sensatori - Mexico this year. I'm pretty sure its listed on the map as the Azul, because I've seen it called the Azul Sensatori.
Looked at the Excellence both in Mexico & Dom Rep - but decided to wait as DD wants to get married there (at the Excellence Dom Rep).0 -

Like all places you will get some who enjoy and others who don't for whatever reason. Does seem to make a difference whether you stay in the Casitas or not (we did) and whether you are there when the place is full or not (ours wasn't). Also some people I guess have different expectations from others
However EDRoyale is not really appropriate for OP as they want to walk to facilities which you clearly can't at EDRoyale0 -

Mrs E the Excellence is amazing, we went to Excellence in Dominican Republic last year for part of our honeymoon and it was just fantastic!0 -
the only thing that i dont like about the really big hotels complexes is that some are so big you dont ever really get to know your fellow guests and for me a lot of the time they are the ones that can make or break your holiday and give you good memories I prefer the smaller ones
At the Bahia Principe in Mexico they had golf buggys that ran 24 hours to shuttle the guests around otherwise it would take you all day to get to from the room to the beach - it was so big with so many resturants, pools, bars, and games areas, shopping area it was like its own little town. You would see someone once and then never see them again - if it was a was a cruise ship you would think that they have fallen overboard0 -
The Gran Bahia Principe doesn't have great reviews and I was reading in the paper today about how hundreds of people fell ill and the hotel conditions were very poor. this was for the one in Dominican Republic I think so I'm going to avoid that hotel!
Booking a holiday should be fun, I always stress myself out because I always want to get the best deal for our money so it takes me ages to research etc. Oh well, its all fun and games...0 -
The one that we stayed at was fine dont know what its like now as it was around 2 and a bit years ago but no probs with food and the hotel and the grounds were immaculate
Rui Hotels normally ofer a very very high standards i have only stayed in one in canaries and one in dominican but both were great very luxurious and grand public rooms and the bedrooms that i have stayed in have been huge I know what you mean though about booking holidays
I hate being dissapointed with a holiday and really try to read between the lines i never bother with holiday brochures as they only show the good bits
but i actually think its harder to book holidays now cos of all of the reviews on trip advisor you find the perfect hotel and some ..... says its horrible the weather was crap the sand was to hot :rotfl:so of you go again to search for another hotel that is perfect
I drive my other half nuts because i do so much research before booking a holiday but then again most of the time my oh dont even know where were going untill we arrive at the airport and get out flight
Im trying to book a holiday at the moment in May for myself my son and my niece but despite having been to loads of places just dont know where to goThe Gran Bahia Principe doesn't have great reviews and I was reading in the paper today about how hundreds of people fell ill and the hotel conditions were very poor. this was for the one in Dominican Republic I think so I'm going to avoid that hotel!

We are looking at Riu hotels now...thanks for the advice..Thomson are doing pretty good deals, not going to book just yet though, hoping we can get a better deal. Leaving it quite late, we want to fly out at the end of April for around 2 weeks, possibly 12 nights...0

I would recommend the Riu hotels. We have stayed at the Tequila twice now and are hoping to go back again this year. The advantage of the Riu's is that you can use the facilities at all four of them in Playacar should you fancy a change of scenery.
Both times I have managed to find a £100 off code which has helped.0
