Problems with Internet - PC on last legs?

Hi, we are looking for some help/advice on flwg problem:
We have a 5 or 6 year old MESH PC (Windows XP) which has generally been great (Apart from initial graphic card problems and difficulties communicating with Mesh to resolve at the time).
However, in last two months or so we have had trouble with our internet connection - it seems very unstable and crashes quite alot that means we have to reboot the PC and/or unplug the modem.
I've cleaned the PC up as much as poss and continue utilise various antispyware etc (We also have AVG that scans everyday – if we let it)
We are with Virgin Media but after going to them over the last two weeks or so, it's seems the problem definitely relates to our PC. I can honestly say Virgin were extremely helpful, initially they sent a new modem and when that didnt help, one of their people did checks thru my pc with 'Ping' tests etc to establish it was a problem with the ethernet drivers. At this point, we had no internet connection on our pc though the modem connection was fine.
I was advised to download and reinstall the ethernet drivers (Marshall Yukon) and after much huffing and puffing, managed to do this on my sons laptop connecting directly into our modem. It took a while to figure out how to actually install from the files saved but think I managed it OK in then (I did uninstall original driver first).
Anyway, this did seem to solve our immediate problem and got us back the connection (except for some reason it stopped my kids from connecting via the wireless connection which I thought was something completely separate on our PC?).
Unfortunately, it hasn’t resolved the problem as the connection keeps crashing still. I even had to do a system restores yesterday to get back up and running.
So the questions I have are……..
1. Has anyone else encountered this type of problem and/or knows a solution?
2. Should we just cut our losses and upgrade to a new PC. Maybe it’s just our PC is giving up the ghost – it’s certainly become quite noisy (I have cleaned inside the box recently)
I’m now also encountering problems with word as I type this out something about “Run Time Error!” I closed a document a short while ago without saving it which is not unusual for me, but it’s giving me all sorts of problems…..arrghhh!!! I do get the feeling we've been infiltrated by something unknown .
Any advice will be very welcome - Thanks

Hi johnG
First thing I would check is for any nasties on your system, I know you said you have run AVG but have you run an malware scanner ie. Malwarebytes?
If not download Malwarebytes here.....
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Make sure you download latest version 4.88MB.
Once downloaded open Malwarebytes and update it.
Once updated run a full scan.
If the scan finds anything, delete anything it finds.
Post (just copy & paste)the Malwarebytes log files here.0 -
Thanks fiddiweb,
Yes I do have malwarebytes loaded and I ran it after checking this forum a few weeks ago (19 jan) to try to see how I could solve the problems we were having. I believe it's still the same version 1.44 so will do another scan now and then post the results as suggested.
Many thanks for your intervention :T0 -
Hi John
Make sure you update it first.0 -
Whoops
, have aborted scan and now updated, new scan now under way.... 0 -
malwarebytes ~
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log):idea:0 -
Seems to give a clean bill of health......?

I mean that we are happily working on the internet or outlook, switching back and forth, when it suddenly tells us there is no connection so email fails to send/receive and we have a fairly blank screen saying no "Internet Connection". It won't return unless we reboot and or disconnect/reconnect the modem, or as mentioned earlier after messing about with driver files and most recently, restoring to an earlier day.
We've always found our Broadband connection to be reliable up until around the end of last year apart from when Virgins service failed (We generally knew it to be them upon investigation).
It seems something simply triggers it to disconnect or that it is simply a very fragile connection on our pc?0 -
next time it happens, go to the cmd prompt, and type
ipconfig /all
ping yourroutersipaddresseg192.x.x.x.
ping www.google.com
note what comes up and post back
this may help
