As far as I am aware only Pets @ Home does PROPER treatments such as Advocate (fleas) & Drontal (worms) - it's locked away. Other on the counter stuff (Bob Martin & Shirleys) is not worth the bother. Vets sell the stuff that works.

Much better results here with Advocat compared to Frontline which seems to lose its effectiveness after a while. Be aware Advocat also do a version for pets under 4kg, we had an old cat that got so skinny he was only about 3kg towards the end of his life.

One vet local to us does a promotion where if you buy a 6 pack you get a 3 pack free which is worth quite a lot of money so phone around local vets for bargains.

This may be a stupid question, but do I just phone my local vet & ask about flea treatment or would I be expected to make an appointment for the cat to be seen?

Your cats will need to be registered at the vets but won't need to be seen so you can shop around. Also Frontline worked for us for quite a while before it lost its effectiveness so if money is tight and you haven't had any particular flea problems feel free to use it.

The "flea season" seems to kick off around September when central heating is turned on, if you don't already have a problem then you will probably be ok going through the summer but switch to Advocat before next autumn.

My 4 are all on Program injections - I can't recommend it enough!

They get an injection every 6 months and off the top of my head it costs about £20 per cat per 6 months (it is usually part of their large annual jabs bill so I don't look too hard!)

I have not had sight nor sound of a flea for years now - I reckon that when we did get a flea infestation (as I can't read instructions properly!!!!) it cost me somewhere in the region of £500 to sort it out, so I see it as money saving!

Sorry - Don't want to scare you with the £500!!! - the £500 was because one cat was allergic to fleas and ended up at the vets with all sorts of problems, we also had to have 2 houses defumigated and 2 cars - long story but the cats moved around a lot!

If money is tight then I would consider doing a Program injection for the flea season, and popping on some frontline or other flea remedy for the other 6 months.

Is Advocat ok for dogs too? I always used Frontline - purely as a preventative mmeasure as I've never seen fleas on my dogs, and they don't scratch.

But I am concerned at reports that Frontline no longer works. With Spring just around the corner I certainly don't want my dogs to get any fleas as they do play with other dogs they meet.
  • Chardonnay if money is as tight as you say it is and you're interested in taking some Frontline off me I have three month's supply of Frontline Plus I can send to you in the post. You will need to buy an environmental spray to treat your home to help get a proper hold on the infestation. I think I have a can of some around here somewhere that I can also send you if you like. That is, if I can find it. Please send me your address by private message if you'd like them.
  • We use Advocate for our dog, as advised by the vet.

It's doing what it should so I'll stick with that.

Always get advice from yout vet.
