Flea Treatment

Can anyone recommend the best flea treatment for a cat & my home? And whether they are available from vets or retailers

Thanks

  • I have been looking at other sites & apparently frontline spot on seems like a good option. Does anyone have experience of using this. It also seems like you can buy it online. Does anyone have experience of reputable suppliers.

    Thanks

I was told by my vet not to use frontline as it seems as though fleas have started to become immune to it!!

I use one i get from the vet called advocate, this also does worming too

just do not use bob martin - it wont work and could make your cat ill

Advocate is the new frontline. After a while the fleas may become immune to Advocate too, and a new one will come along. See it happening over the years. I would only buy it from the vets though.

  • This may be a stupid question, but do I just phone my local vet & ask about flea treatment or would I be expected to make an appointment for the cat to be seen?

My concern is the cost. We would be eligible for PDSA emergency treatment due to housing/council tax, but not sure what the most affordable option is for flea treatment.
  • I am not sure if PDSA help with things such as flea treatment.
Unfortunately good flea prevention can be very expensive. Bob martin etc is really not recommended and Frontline no longer works so is money wasted. If the vet has already seen and registered your cats then they are normally happy to dispense Advocate without an appointment. If you have fleas in the house then you will need to buy Indorex or RIP sprays which are both about £12.

Financial assistance is generally not offered for things like worming & flea treatment unless you had a special arrangement (like took a sick animal in where they agreed to pay for all meds required).

    Advantage
    Advocate
    Stronghold

All three are good - you can get from the vets or get a prescription & use to buy online.

I knew someone who had his two injected for fleas & worms - personally I don't believe in such invasive treatment & never made enquiries about that so can't comment.

Note: insurance doesn't cover for fleas, worms, or yearly vaccs

PDSA do flea and worming treatments too, well they did last year when I was registered....I couldnt find anything online to confirm this. Worth phoning them to ask.

discounted? :money: Worth doing a comparison. I know of one charity selling for more than you can buy it online (but less than the private vets) but couldn't be bothered with the prescription sending online hassle - I think it's a bit like a donation to the charity.

go to the vets frontline does not work, i think the vet charged me £12 for a couple of treatments, i also got this good home spray from pets at home called natural insect killing spray by strikeback, it does exactly what it says on the can lol within in hours i had dead insects all over it was about a tenner, just get out of the house after you have sprayed it

    Ooops

yes thank you Rita! It was of course 'discounted' NOT free! And as you say it was not cheaper than buying online but less hassle as they were already there having jabs!
