Help needed, anyone know Asdas policy when you are sold bad meat

Hi bought a reduced asda smart price pork joint for £6, sell by date today, put it straight in fridge and waited until 6pm until it got a bit cooler to put oven on, only to open it and find it was really smelling off.

I rang Asda and spoke to a really lovely lady who said BIN IT, bring in receipt and packaging and we will refund. well I was really pleased about that as £6 is a lot out of my pension, but I now face extra taxi fare to get my refund. and meat for the week, I am disabled and cannot get there any other way.

Should I mention this when I go?

Phone them up and tell them that your local environment health authority will come and collect it for FREE in order to examine it, meat opened on its sell by date should be perfectly fresh UNLESS it has been repackaged (more common than you would like to know), has had an artificially long sell by date in the first place, stored incorrectly, or even contaminated during processing.

I can't understand why you are so surprised myself as Asda meat is generally very poor quality anyway and it is common for it to be quite rancid within its sell by date.

They'll be happy to wait until your next scheduled shopping visit. I had a problem with weevils in my flour. Not only did they wait until my next shop (arranged to make myself known at the customer services desk) but they also, as I requested/demanded supplied me with four airtight containers for my flour so that any poxy weevils that had escaped from the infested bag couldn't get at my new supply.

If you can't wait that long - you can only ask... they might oblige.

Otherwise they might consider a delivery, if they do them in your area, and perhaps waive the charges.

I have to be fair and this has not been my experience I am on basic pension and if meat is to be on the menu its almost always reduced, I have never had this problem before. Have been an Asda shopper for years, but thank you for the information regarding local environment health authority, did not know that

    Hi mgardner

This reminds me of an occasion when a friend's mum discovered her joint of meat to be bad on a Sunday morning, rang the store and asked them to deliver a fresh one as she was already preparing the lunch, and one of the managers drove round to deliver it himself!

I have only ever had to return a fresh fruit salad, which was off, and on that occasion they refunded the money and gave me a £2 gift voucher for the inconvenience. Asda have special vouchers that they give out to apologise for poor service etc, where the CS staff hand write the amount of credit they are giving in compensation at their own discretion.

I would ring again, explain the taxi issue and ask if they could either deliver the refund, or as Squeaky says, if they could refund you next time you are in store.

I have never had problems with Asda in particular - and the customer service have always been lovely with me.
