lots of the new HP cartridges have a chip inside and when the ink level goes down past the chip it kills the cartridge so it can't be refilled, The best way to fix it is to do what i did, Buy and epson printer and get the inks from ebay/amazon etc.

Yes, That's the right thing to do. I bought an Epson TX220W and have refillable cartridges; when they go empty, I just refill them with a syringe. We Brazilians are mad at HP, who thinks we're fools. No way, Epson has by far higher resolution, two-year warranty, USB cable included and a net of factory-authorized technical assistance places, which HP doesn't have any longer.

    Bye bye, HP.:T

Had the same issues myself with a hp all in one printer c780 i think the model is? Resloved it by taking them back out and resetting the printer
worth a try but might not work? worked for me anyway
"MSE Money saving challenges..8/12/13 3,500 saved so far :j" p.s if i been helpfully please leave me a thank you but seek official advice at all times from a pro
  • Thanx, Flex, but the problem down here in Brazil seems to be rather tougher to solve. Anyway, a local manufacturer has broken the code and is producing HP60-like cartridges. Not withstanding, my Epson TX220W with refillable cartidges is the best solution; I'll forget about HP.
  • With regards to the original post about refilling the HP 300, I had success after reading ohyeahitssorcy's post @ #3 but all I needed was ONE old cartridge (which was the one previous to the cartridge that I refilled).

So after I refilled my existing cartridge, I had the same problem as the original poster. I then inserted the previous cartridge and the printer said it needed to realign for the new cartridge. I took that one out and inserted the refilled one and, Hey Presto, the printer works.

    So in summary
    1. Refill your current cartridge
    2. Insert an old cartridge
    3. When the printer asks to start realignment, insert your refilled cartridge.
  • Weel, thank you! Not withstanding, I do state here that Epson is by far better than HP. With an Epson TX220W and a refillable set of cartridges, I didn't have any more troubles. Also, Epson's printing quality is by far better than HP's.

But I'll post your precious info in my blog, here in Brazil (bilingual: Portuguese/English)

    Thank you.

  • You should have no problems with refilled HP300 carts as long as you use the ones that have come out of your machine, these carts have a smart chip in them that recognises the serial number of the machine, we successfully fill hundreds of the things, the ink monitor will say it's empty but that shouldn't stop you printing as with these carts you never believe what the ink monitor says, it doesn't measure the ink in the cart, all it does is count pages. Generaly the onloy time these play up is if the cartridge is dud or on it's way out.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Not strictly true, see my post above, the chip is just a page counter and does not kill the cartridge when the ink gets to certain level. As for buying an Epson instead, that's a whole new can of worms, the new machines are programed to, at best make your life a misery if you use compatible carts and at worst reject them altogether. The best machine to go for if you want to refill your own cartridges is something like a Canon MG5250, they are easy to do yourself and hold more ink than the current HP and Epson carts, all you need is a chip resetter which will cost you about £10.

  • Ok, Thank you again for the info; you're right about the chips, they're nothing but page counters: when removed and then reinserted, the printer assumes cartridges are full, although not refilled. Indeed, Canon is not a very popular printer brand in Brazil, but I'll be talking to dealers and letting my readers know about it.

    Best regards,

    Luiz, Brazil.

I have an MG5250 - good printer and scanner - but ... the cartridges are not see thru so are very difficult to refill - there is a solution to this by buying a set of 521 cartridges that have a clear panel on the side - you can then take the chips off the 526's and fit them on the 521's - refill (by the 'german method') and use a redsetter to reset the chip memory. Hope it helps.

Pretty good, Interstellar, and I will recommend this printer. The problem down here (Brazil) is that HP printers are best-sellers, and consumers are real mad at this HP-60 cartridge. I have already handed information on the case to the DA, which is investigating it. We have a good Consumer Act, and it's likely that things will change concerning such cartridges. You know, average users are not used to dealing with inks, chips and other technical details. Thus, the only thing to do now is to tell readers what are the best options, for those who haven't bought a printer yet, or for the ones who have given up and are willing to buy a different one. Also available in Brazilian mkt is a Brother printer, quite fast, hi-resolution, and bulk catridge-friendly.Of course, MG5250 might be a pretty good option, I'll check out its availability and price - HPs are rather cheap, comparing to other brands - in our mkt.

Wow! What a printer! 9600dpi resolution! Now, let's see if it's available locally and its price, once US$300.00 means about at least 50% plus, due to our skyrocketing taxes.

Thanx again 4 the precious hint.
