They will have F-35's though - top notch planes!!

But as there will be only two carriers it means they can only be in two places at once...

Maggie had a Royal Navy equipt to do the job...

    We haven't got that now...

Argentina have not noticably updated their forces since 82, and have lost several capabilities (specifically Exocet & thier Aircraft carrier)

UK forces were specifically upgraded in the light of Falklands experience & have 28 years of general upgrades as well.

The only capabilities lost are sea harrier (but replaced with fast jets operating from the falklands/GR9 harrier off carriers [no rader but has better missiles & is faster/longer ranged & has organic airbourne warning & control aircraft]) and Vulcan for long range bombing (replaced by submarine-launched cruise missiles that can also reach the Argentine mainland).

Look at a map & the range of their aircraft - most can't get there and back.

This is political posturing for domestic consumption

The Faulkland Islands that is. I have a sneaky suspicion Gordy is going to allow things to escalate in the south atlantic so that he can declare the state in War and put off the election whilst he hopes to gain public support for winning a war. Just my thoughts.

That should help clear the deficit
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher
  • this cretin will do anything to cling to power. falklands??? if someone stole his stapler he would declare a state of emergency to cling on and avoid the election

If it keeps this fantasy island of House Price Inflation going Gordon will invade Russia, America and Mars if he thinks he could get away with it.

Luckily we can all see through the !!!!!!!! that has been happening in the last 12 months, well most of us outside of Aberdeen can.
You realize house inflation will most certainly continue under the conservatives don't you?
they are the party of capitalism.;)
  • As for wars this government has exhausted many peoples patience with war so i don't think it would do him any good to have another.
there would be no justification unless the argies invaded.

wrong - they can only be in one place at once.

You need 2 carriers opperating in tamdem to be able to fight a war. If planes take off from 1 carrier what happens if the runway is out of action for whatever reason when it needs to land?

You really need 3 carriers to allow you to repair / upgrade one and still be bale to fight a conflict. It would be a fat lot of good kicking off a 6 month upgrade / overhall / repair job etc and then needing it. you'd have to wait 6 months before you could even dispatch your taskforce

Here is how it looks from a UK perspective as per a conversation with my mate in the Royal Marines.

Retaking The Islands if lost - we need :
Lots of available war/support ships (nope)
    Several carriers (nope)
Lots of sea bourne fighter bombers, helicopters etc (nope)
Many thousands of battle hardened troops (yes but in the wrong place..)

    However:

Defending the Islands - we need:
    Decent anti aircraft batteries (check)
Top notch defensive fighter planes (check)
A goodly number of well trained/equiped troops in fortified/dug in positions (check)
Submarine/Waterbourne screen with sea/land attack and air defence capability (check)

The above is why the islanders sleep easy.. and why this will not go beyond political posturing, hopefully leading to a sensible economic deal based on our using Argentine refining and port infrastructure should lots of oil be found
Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger

I agree. A pragmatic deal, based on a share of the proceeds of any oil sales, seems a far more likely scenario. Frankly, all this talk of a possible military conflict seems wildly premature.

As you and others have pointed out, the military balance in the South Atlantic has shifted significantly in our favour. There is also the radical change in the Argentine government from the Military junta of the early 80s to the democratically elected civilian government of today.

Indeed. And what is even more appalling is the cynical way he manipulates others into assisting his fiendish schemes.

Lets examine the key events behind Brown's Operation Jingoism attempt to start a new Falklands war to win the election.

100m BC. Brown massacres the plankton and crushes them under his bullying foot to turn them into oil.
1765. Brown commissions John Byron to sail to the Falkland Islands and claim them for himself.
1776 Reactionary Blairite forces compel Brown to abandon the Falklands. He will be back!
1833 Brown commands the Royal Navy to reclaim the Falklands.
1981 Brown tells Defence Secretary John Nott to propose scrapping HMS Endurance. this convinces Galtieri (Brown's room-mate during Rugby tours) that Britain isn't interested in the Falklands and opens the door to the Argie invasion. Brown knows this is needed to strengthen the British military presence on the islands and thus our claim on the oil.
2007 Brown appoints Kirchner President of Argentina and orders her to turn up the nationalist rhetoric. This reaches its peak when having sent his family-owned oil company in to prospect for oil (result "there is oodles of the stuff") he commands her to throw an embargo around the islands.
2010 Brown dispatches ships to the Falklands to enable his oil exploration ships to get past the Argentine embargo he had installed.

When it comes to being an evil mastermind, you can't beat Brown.
