Not in all cases, it depends on what if any measures the oner had taken to prevent the dog escaping from the home0 -
If you don't report it to the Police within 24hrs you may be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
The Police may also investigate as you must have being going faster than 5mph.
I wasn't going more than five miles an hour. Had just left the roadside and had to slow to a practical crawl to get through the cul de sac as there are cars on either side. I didn't just leave, I stayed for ages and it was the owners who said to just go because it wasn't my fault and there was nothing i could do. They were just going to take it to the vets. My car is a 3 litre Omega Elite and is huge, so even a glancing knock at that speed could do some damage. The dog was hit in the head and I think if it had been hit anywhere else it would have been fine. Around 6 people witnessed it and saw I was going that slow. I did wonder why when i asked if i had to report it to someone they said not to bother but found out that the owners could get into trouble. No damage to the car so won't contact insurance company. Forgot to say that the dog was almost level with the car when it darted out and it couldn't be seen before that because it was at night and very dark with no street light where it was. We saw the man walking near it, but not the dog. So the front of the car was just about a foot or two away when it darted out. I was at a crawl iin a road that I presume in a built up area has a 30mph limit. Even I think that's too fast for a cul-de-sac though, so we were at a crawl to get through the cars parked either side.
So if there's no damage to the car and the owners say not to bother reporting it, I still should? Should I have given them my details? They didn't even bother taking my reg plate. At the end of the day, an animal was hurt and that's upsetting.0 -
if it ran off from the accident with just a bloody nose - its probably ok.
Don't want to be morbid but even if the animal had live threatening injuries it's not unusually for them to run off. My dad hit a small Jack Russell doing 50 stright under the car it ran off i doubt it survived unless it got some veterinarian help quite quickly. Left my dad stranded on a dark winter evening in Cheetham hill, Manchester.0 -

a) You've just tried to kill them, why would they hang around for you to finish the job?
b) Despite you trying to kill them they always get the blame - why would they wait for plod so you can dob them in?
Anyway where can you do 50 legit in Cheetham Hill?0 -
I think hitting a domestic pet needs to be reported to the police, I don't think the police will follow it up but it can't hurt to report it.

So now you know.0 -
I would presume the main though fair but that is a good point I was not there at the time just what I was told. This was 4 years ago my dad had the car three month or so from brand new. It burst both the normally radiator(hence the the stranded bit), the air con, cracked the front bumper and tore off the plastic sump guard) Over a grand to get it all repaired fully comp insurance though. The air con rad and refill seemed to make the air con work much better though.
The real kick in the teeth was the next day having to trek down to the police station to report it cold winter rain. Which by the way as others have sad your meant to do.
My mum was waking my sis to school once a dog got reversed by a van pulled into the wheel arch the driver pulled forward realsing the dog and it ran off. They just run an adrenalin for a few minutes to clear of the danger then curl up and die unfortunately.0 -
When my father hit and killed a loose/stray dog in a rough area of glasgow, there was no sign of the owners so he reported it at the police station. They took the details then said "well done. see if you can hit another on the way back"!
PS. Both he and I are dog lovers, before the abuse starts.0
