    I'd rather be out skating, snowboarding or surfing than busting a gut for £35k a year.

    I work 20 hours a week and love the job 'cos its low pressure and we all have a laugh. Plus it gives me spare time to actually enjoy life. After all are we put on this earth to work all the time?

    Who needs £35k a year when there's perfect concrete, powder and waves out there. The best things in life are free you know!

    Any how many weeks in the mountains did your 20 hour weeks and less than 35k get you? Unless you work those 20 hrs a week at the bottom of a ski lift or by the beach you're still going to be limited to 25 days leave and have half as much money to spend on holidays.

    I have spent 3 week in the snow! I also get 30 days leave per year not 25.

    Also if you do 37 hours a week you do as a rough estimate 37*52 = 1924 hours of work per year. Less your leave of course.

    I do 20*52 = 1040 hours per year - that is 884 hours per year less. 884/24 = 36.8 days a year less than someone doing 37 hours per week. So in effect my total leave for the year is - 30 Paid Days plus 36.8 unpaid days = 66.8 days of leave!

    I think!

    I think it's really nice that we have bohemian dreamers like you, willing to work few hours in less competitive areas of employment. As long as you have a ramp, a bit of snow or a car park, you're very happy - and good for you I say. It means there's slightly less competition for the high paid jobs and better lifestyles. Skate on, my son!:j

    Incidentally Leeds Lad, how much of this £35k do you give to the needy? Charities and that? I don't measure people on thier salary but on their generosity as a person.

    good to read that some people have their priorities right, the best things in life really are free:T

    Why don't you live in the mountains or on a beach? You sound so critical of those who work hard and earn a decent amount. Some of us work hard and play hard you know.... 13 weeks on snow this season for me. I really don't recall the last free skiing holiday I had mind you, more likely to cost an arm and a leg, if I don't break one, then it's a tad more.

    I think it's a fair question OP... But, I think if you really want to be hitting the big time financially, you probably need to move into an industry like investment banking. One of my old clients was a big IB and there were 23 year olds starting on £60k earning £50-100k bonuses.

    As for me, my earnings have been as follows:

    22yrs = £19k
    23yrs = £21.5k
    25yrs = £27k
    27yrs = £40k
    30yrs = Approx £56k (I say approx because I'm now based in Australia on $94k)

    Bonuses have been a bit slack the past couple of years due to the recession, but I'm expecting 15% this year.

    I have a degree and work in a specialist part of HR and am happy with my niche... My current employer is a "good" company to work for with lots of benefits, holidays etc. I expect I'll be there for a while, although I have a habit of thinking that the grass is always greener and now at the ripe old age of 30 I'm beginning to learn that there is some value in better the devil you know.

    This definitely isn't my dream job... But I don't know what else I'd be doing if I wasn't doing this, so for now, it suits me fine...

    I'm earning around 3 times what I was about 6 years ago.... but then I was I've invested a lot of time and money in my own progression/development, and made arguments/moves where necessary to get what I deserve.

    I think these factors are probably universal in any industry. Be good at whatever you do, know you're good and make sure those a couple of levels up do too.

    Your maths are flawed as you have compared apples against oranges in your calculations.You get less leave in hourly terms than someone in FTwork and you have not taken this into consideration in your calculations

    The average working week is 37.5hrs worked over 5 days with a minimum of 28 days holiday per year. (104 days weekend or 2/7) 365-104-28 = 233 days at work. So the average FT worker spends 1747hrs at work. Minus of course average sick days of around 7-10 days pa.

    You do 20hrs per week but you still work 5 days, so you are still in work for 233 days of the year. (233 x 4 = 932hrs) I make that 815hrs not 884hrs. If you get 30 days leave you have to give the other example 30 days to be of a fair comparison so I have based yours on the legal min 28 for fair comparison.

    I dont get your point though as you are still at work for the same amount of days so you dont really have any ''extra'' days as such just reduced working hours. Guys that work on oil rigs work 2wks on 3wks off, so they only work 2/5 of the year. Looks good on paper but crunch the numbers down and they still work the average 1750hrs or so in work. (146 x 12)

    Money makes the world go round. Sad, but true.

    But then they don't spend time commuting to the office every day. So it's more about the quality of those hours. An office worker might only work for 7 hours a day but it's not as if they can do an awful lot with their mornings and lunch breaks and there's only so much one can do in an evening.
