Young High Earners

Hi - being the ambitious type, I always like to measure myself against how other people in similar circumstance do for themselves.

I'd be interested to hear if there's anyone out there who has managed to bag a real high paying job at a young age?

I'm 27 and on £35k - probably middle of the road - there anyone who is earning lots more and younger/same age? How did you do it?

    Depends where you live!

£35k for a London salary at that age isn't that high at all, but for outside of London would be pretty good, and in some areas a miracle!

And 27 isn't that young - you've had 11 whole years from school leaving age...

Personally I'm thinking of taking a pay cut for more job satisfaction, as money isn't everything.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Well I'm oop North so can take heart from that. And thanks for reminding me I'm not so young!

However what I meant by young is I wasn't necessarily wanting to compare my wage with people later on in their careers, as I'm hoping my wage will increase.

I appreciate many people don't like to discuss such things also.

So then Pink shoes - you sound like you're on a bit? How much and how old?

Congrats on your salary leeds_lad but is this a wise topic for discussion.?
I'm not at all fussed by it, but there could be a few of the more "straight talking" Forumers who may be on minimum wage or un-employed who would see the only purpose of your Post was to brag how much you are earning and I'm afraid you may be in for a rough ride from some rather than a gentle conversation comparing salaries ?
 Quick! there's still time to delete it before any-one notices ! ;)

  • Sorry - as you will see from my post count, I'm pretty new round here!

My intention is not to brag, nor do I seek congratulations. I am aware my wage is above the 'national average', and that there are many less fortunate, however I'm also aware there are many who will be doing better than me and at a younger age - I'd be interested to see by how much and how they did it.

I bring it up here, since it's not the sort of thing you can discuss with people you know in person, and it's pretty relevant to what we are all trying to achieve here, which is to make the most of what money we have (and making money is surely part of that?).

For those who don't wish to discuss, then there's no need to post anything, but I'd just like to see where am at versus where I could have been.
  • You can be ambitious without wanting to earn high amounts of money. My ambitions are a little different to yours - mine are based around my children growing up to become decent members of society, who are willing and able to help others. I'm not in a position to work as I care for my disabled child, but I do voluntary work and I suppose you could say that it is also one of my ambitions to help young people develop their potential and again become decent adults.

I'm happy having enough money to cover our needs. As others have said, money isn't everything. Having been up since 1.45am with a sick child (I'll withold the details for those with delicate stomachs ;)), I know that there are more important things in life than high wages. Happiness, my kids, health, sleep........
  • Sorry I think this is coming across all wrong.

Money isn't everything, I don't see myself as better or worse than anyone who earns less/more, it's not my number one ambition, I don't wish to brag or seek congratulations etc.

But if I'm going to go to work, then yes I want to enjoy it, but one of the main reasons to go to work is to earn, and you may as well earn what you can while you can? At the end of the day money does help you achieve many of your other goals in life, or at least make them easier?

I'd just like to know how I could have got ahead quicker, or if relative to my potential I've under-perfomed.
  • So how will finding out what people you dont know on the internet earn, help you realise your potential?

Different people in different jobs, living in different parts of the country earn differing amounts of money based on a load of different factors.

You're better off speaking to people in the same sort of field to you to work out if you should be earning more etc.

No, I'm sure it's not.... I'm also new here so afraid I have been bombarding the Forum whilst its a novelty but the novelty soon will wear off along with my replies so just bear with me until then !
There are many helpful answers and colourful characters with interesting responses, some of those responses can be a bit blunt ! and make interesting reading (as long as you are not on the receiving end of them - you had been warned !) ;)

What you need to consider though is higher paying jobs are normally a lot more volatile, with a high expectation to sell and continue to sell and that there is less long term growth prospects on those salaries.

Personally I am 22 and earning 22k - outwith london and being paid to be put through all my studies. I work strictly 9-5 35 hour week and have an easy life. I could earn more elsewhere no doubt but I doubt I would be as happy in my working life or receiving as much support.
