Hi

I just got a Toshiba NB220-12N netbook this week. It only has 1GB of RAM and I am thinking of upgrading it to 2GB.

Will this make it faster, ie will I notice a difference?

OH is concerned that I may lose some information, but I don't think that will be affected. Can someone confirm?

I looked at the online manual and it seemed straightforward enough. Anything I should be aware of?

I am going to use Crucial to check which memory is compatible and will probably order from them.

Will changing the memory invalidate the warranty?

  • It should be easy as you said, I did my Samsung using crucial co.uk and got the memory next day. You should lose nothing if you are careful

    Thanks.

I am aware you need to discharge any static from the body by touching something metal, like a radiator, before starting. Anything else I should be doing?

Do I need any special tools or will a normal screwdriver be enough?

Normal Phillips screwdriver should be enough. The RAM will have a clip on either end that holds it in place.
Should be about a 10 minute job (taking your time).
Agree with getting rid of static (not good for computers).
And you should see a marked difference in performance.

Thanks. Think I'll get onto Crucial and get it ordered.

Check Crucial for what you need, but they may not be the best place to get it from. Have a scout about before you actually order.

Do you have any sites you could suggest I try? I've never bought memory before so have no idea what to look out for.

Try Play, Amazon, places like that.

In that case use Crucial, even if it is a bit more expensive. If you order using the System Scanner then they guarantee compatability and in the event of any problems they will change the RAM, no questions asked.
Your OH is completely barking up the wrong tree with concerns about data loss. Data is not held in RAM when the system is powered down, it is held on your hard drive. Removing/swapping/upgrading RAM cannot possibly cause data loss, unless you were to somehow destroy the hard drive when upgrading it!

Yes, upping the ante on the Ram can often be the most effective and cheapest way to increase performance ;).

    Thanks both.

I had a quick look on Play.com and Amazon and both offered dozens of variations, many of which were obviously wrong. Crucial offered one.

I just used the drop down menu to select the right model rather than download the System Scanner. Will this be OK or should I still use the scanner?

Will upgrading the memory invalidate the warranty?
