It does not depend on the circumstances, Careless Driving as a specific motoring conviction carries the potential penalties of 3 - 9 points, a fine of upto £2500 and very occassionally a driving ban. As a specific driving conviction (There is a difference between a driving conviction and a criminal conviction) it never carries a jail sentence0
