LPG for high mileage cars, More hassle than its worth??
Hi.
I'm looking to replace my taxi later this year and due to the rising costs of fuel I was considering a LPG. If I did choose one I would want a factory fitted one, and although I have had issues with my current Vectra 2.2dti, I am prepared to give the dual fuel version a try pending the opinions I get from this question.
Some have said they're great, save money etc. but others have said that they are very problematic and especially with it being used as a taxi, engine running for 8 hrs constant, day in day out that the valves will get too hot and burn? amongst other problems.
Any mechanics views on this?
Thanks in advance

Thanks Mercman,
Thing is I have had a BMW X5 on lpg before so I know its a good set up, but my issue is around whether it is a good set up for a taxi, constant use, rather than my x5 or your merc..0 -
Everyone I know(All of 2) that has converted to lpg has had misfire problems. in my mind something like the golf gt would be a better investment I know diesels sound like a bag of poo but its the way forward with the ever rising cost of petrol0

Does anyone actually offer factory LPG?0 -
One of my mates does a lot of miles and has LPG on his Saab 93. It has worked out well for him and the system has mostly been problem free. There was a valve that went faulty at one point but it was easily sorted out. Apart from that there were no problems with the car and the LPG system had paid for itself in savings after about 20,000 miles.0

The majority of the petrol taxi's in my local town are now running LPG and have been for several years now.
They are all conversions and mainly Toyota Avensis's. The japanese cars are bad for suffering valve seat recession running on LPG, but they appear to cope and more and more are converting or changing from diesel vehicles to petrol and having a conversion.
If they couldn't cope, I suspect we'd have seen that by now. The main thing is having 24 hour access to LPG I guess.
They all fill up in the daytime at the cheapest place in town 52p, but there's a 24 hour forecourt available too 59p a litre.0 -
My Astra has a "Flashlube" (no jokes) kit added to keep the upper cylinder head lubricated and to help prevent damage.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep
