If you change from BT, please check your call plan very carefully.

I changed from BT to Sky for calls and broadband. At the time Sky did not offer line rental.

Next quarter, I got a bill for BT for line rental plus one off costs. This turned out to be caller ID and 1571. I did not want these "services" complained and asked for refund, no joy:(. I was told these services would be cancelled .................

Next bill, I still have these one off service costs

I have now changed my Sky package to include line rental :o

Not a scam. BT Answer 1571 and BT Privacy (includes Caller ID) require you to make 2 calls a month or 6 per quarter through BT in order for the service to be free. If you fail to make those calls you have to pay a charge for each service. When you moved just your calls to Sky you ceased to make those calls and so you were charged.

BT highlight these services as "free" on the call plan, the condition for usage are buried in the small print. I await their response as to why they continued to bill me AFTER these services were cancelled.

You may consider it is my fault for not reading the conditions? I post in the hope that it may save a.n.others from making the same "mistake".

  • I think it is fair to say you were tripped up by their hidden terms in the first instance, so will have no recompense. However you requested the services be cancelled when you realised the situation and they failed to do so, you should therefore be entitled to a refund of any charges after the cancellation date.

If you choose to place your calls through another supplier surely it makes commercial sense for them to expect something back from you to use the Call Features in question.

    http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25504&s_cid=con_FURL_calls_callingfeatures

"Customers who do not make chargeable or inclusive calls with BT will be charged for BT Answer 1571 standard service. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable or inclusive calls with BT in that month (excludes calls made with BT Broadband Talk) or BT will charge (incl. VAT) £1 a month for the standard BT Answer 1571 service. Customers who are billed quarterly must make at least six chargeable or inclusive calls with BT within that quarter or BT will charge (incl. VAT) £3 a quarter."

"Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost if the following calls are made. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge £2.59 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £7.77 a quarter"

They should of course not be billing you for them after you cancelled them.

Thanks for posting the link. In my opinion BT are a bit sneaky by hiding that in their T&Cs. Maybe not a scam but certainly sharp practice. No one would choose to pay BT when those options are free from Sky.

Hopefully highlighting my mistake will help a.n.others.

You appear to be omitting the cost of a subscription to a TV package with Sky. As far as I know a Sky telephone landline is not available as a standalone product. So rather than being 'free' from Sky, Caller ID and 1571 cost £13 or £14 per month more than from BT.

A bit of a sneaky sharp practice being displayed by you for hiding the conditions and true cost.

am getting BT line rental and a/t calls soon.
Confused about 1571 and caller display charges.
If i just make free calls under my a\t plan will 1571 and caller display still be free?
(1571 mentions chargeable\inclusive calls to save £1 month and Caller Display [bt privacy] mentions chargeable calls to save £2.59 month.)
What would be the cheapest call??
It is annoying you have to make a silly call when i've added £4~99 a\t tariff.

Inclusive calls count, so two calls to an ordinary landline at anytime in the month will be enough.

Mind and print off your post so next time you take your own advice and it'll save you accusing someone of a "Scam".

    BT's conditions are very clear.
