Left with no money - Post Office Home Insurance

I can't fill up with petrol and I can't do the family shop for the week because of Post Office Home Insurance's inefficiency.
They sent me a letter in January telling me that they would debit my account in the sum of nearly £300, because I had opted for automatic renewal. I hadn't.
I phoned them up and said that I would not be renewing the insurance since I had obtained a much lower quote. I made a note of the time, day and date and the name of the person I had spoken to.
I received the insurance documents in the post this morning! Post Office Insurance had, indeed, taken the money from my account.
I phoned the complaint line. The operative confirmed that I had done all that was necessary and said that I would get a refund - but not for 7 days and that £2.50 would be deducted because I'd had the benefit of a couple of days insurance!
'I don't think so', I replied. What a bloody cheek.
I just can't believe it. But here I am, with no money until they pay back the £300.
I can make a written complaint - I've got the address - but it's not going to help my immediate problem. Any thoughts, anyone?

They cant take 2.50 from you if they confirmed that you cancelled it prior to renewal.I phoned the complaint line. Ask your bank to give you a temporary overdraft because of this error and then complain to post office asking for your charges back and a goodwill gesture for the inconvenience.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Did they take the payment by direct debit? If they did you can get a full and immediate refund from your bank under the direct debit guarantee. Then the bank claim it back from the post office afterwards. Don't think this applies if they took the payment via a recurrent debit card transaction though.0

If you had other cover in place then send the PO proof and they should not deduct the money.0
