Have I made an ISA contribution this year? How can I check?

I moved my ISA from RBS to Natwest in September 2009.

I have been trying to work out if before I moved the money whether I had paid my £3600 allowance into the ISA. Meaning I can make no further contributions this tax year.

I rang RBS who advised me to check my statements; which I do not have.

They told me that I should just try and pay another £3600 into my Natwest account and if I have already subscribed this tax year then it will automatically reject.

The person whom I spoke to at Natwest was clueless and kept saying that I am not allowed to have more then one ISA and that I can't have moved my ISA product from RBS?

So, can anyone tell me is that the best way to do it? Is there another way I can check with HMRC?

Bob.

I suspect that HMRC are unlikely to have any information until the ISA providers make their annual returns.

The paperwork accompanying your transfer from RBS to Natwest will have contained the information as to whether or not (and, if so, when) you had subscribed in the current tax year, so Natwest should be able to advise you.
  • Thanks for that. I will go in next week and see if I can speak to someone who is a little more knowledgable at Natwest about this.

Many providers have a specific department dealing with ISAs, so you may not receive a satisfactory reply in branch.

<Edit> It looks as though this is the case with Natwest (I assume that you have the e-ISA?) - http://www.natwest.com/personal/savings/g2/isas/e-isa.ashx

My apologies for stating the obvious, but if you don't have the RBS ISA statements, do you have statements for the account from which you would have transferred funds to the RBS ISA?

No I don't. It was when I wasn't really sure what I was doing - had money in several rubbish ISAs and also in Icesave. I can't work backwards to try and work it out.

Do you not have Bank statements for the questionable period? If you think it would have been the full £3.6k ........ then that would usually have been identifiable in the period Apr to Sept 09?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • If its an E ISA, log onto your online banking, highlight the account (so that the last few transactions appear) and a button called "view account details" appears, click on this and it will tell you how much you have paid into your ISA this year and how much more you can pay in.
  • RachyClaire: I no longer have my statements fort that period. But lesson learnt I will keep them from now on.
